My story...part 2

So where did I leave off...oh yes, I started a degree in a passion field of mine and eventually left the corporate world to finish it and immerse myself in my new world....

...but why a degree? why start it at 39? Why Psychology & Counselling? Well, this is where some of my back story comes into play. Growing up things weren't always the easiest. On the outside it looked like a perfect world but it wasn't how it really was. I lived most of my childhood with fear and anxiety within my family home which resulted in me growing up so fast and taking an adult role in my life well before I really should have had to. I know lots of people experience things like this but often it's not talked about. These experiences I had shaped me into the person I am today but also caused me a lot of difficulties as I wasn't able to process what it all meant. Things got bottled up and repressed and impacted my life in my 20's and 30's (another post for that story!)

but back to why a degree at 39. Well, having had to grow up so fast, University wasn't even an option for me so I left school at 17 and I took an office job. I actually did well in school, couple of good highers too, but further education wasn't even a conversation in my home and not because they didn't want to but more because it wasn't something my parents had experienced so it wasn't even in their heads. What I remember as clear as day is when I left school I said to people I knew, I would love to be a social worker or a counsellor. Remember this was almost 30 years ago so mental health jobs weren't as widely available and vast as they are now...so those roles were all I knew were out there at that time. They both involved some sort of further education.

...but, I took a job to help support my family after my parents split and because I was so ambitious I continually climbed ladders, changed career from secretarial to mortgages and continued to grow through the corporate world. There was always that niggle though...why wasn't I satisfied with this life I had. I was happy in the general sense of things but I always felt I was destined for something completely different. I just didn't know what or how I would go about making this different. I didn't know there was another way.

So you can see that from a young age I already had an idea that I wanted to help people and in what kind of capacity...life just didn't work out that way....until, as you know from my last article, I was given a shove by the Universe (got into a job I was miserable in). From there things moved forward...slowly....but moved forward because I DECIDED that my life would be different and I started to take ACTION. I didn't know exactly where I was going or what I was doing I just knew it was the right move to start my degree when I did and create a new reality for myself. My degree gave me so much confidence and it was actually the trigger to realising I could have a business because I truly believed in myself. Now I know some people would say you don't need a degree to prove that but for me it was more than academia. You've read my story, so achieving something I had always deep down wanted to do but never believed it was available to me was a pivotal moment. Getting a First Class Honours was the cherry on the cake!

Now I study all the time....I have many qualifications and am still learning every single day. I read all the time and regularly get involved in different programmes to learn new and different perspectives for myself and my business in self development, hypnotherapy, mindset, NLP and coaching and much more

.....and the rest....as they say...is history...

I bet the majority of people follow paths that other people or systems put them on. Like choosing to pursue a career in Biology because you had one inspiring teacher and scored well on that GCSE. So you go chug along and end up sticking with it, either because you don't want to lose the investment in time/money/expertise, or are afraid of change and risk. I fancied myself an archaeologist at a young age, and was obsessed with ancient Greece, so I studied Classics for most of my uni career. When I finally realized I didn't actually want to be an archaeologist after all and would rather uncover the stories of the living than the dead, I shifted into journalism and sweet-talked my way into journalism classes for my final year at uni. Let me tell you, I remember every single thing I learned in those classes, while I remember almost none of my Latin or mythology. When you find your passion and what you are truly meant to do, you'll know it. You will absorb all the knowledge, you won't be able get enough of it! It's so exciting, and I'm glad you not only found it for yourself, but are helping others find it too!

I loved reading this. Your growth mindset is so inspiring, people are always surprised when I say I want to do more courses, it's funny how the societal view seems to be that learning is only for a certain period of your life. The people who I know who seem full of vitality are the curious ones who find new projects or skills to get stuck into!
