As Christmas is approaching, I hope you’re all around those you love, or in a place you love given the circumstances we are currently facing.
As I was reflecting on my year so far, I realised that despite the year we’ve all had, nothing has filled my happiness tank more than being able to serve and help so many people this year find happiness in their careers.
So I wanted to share a story with you:
Once upon a time … there lived a woman who, to the outside world, was living the dream life working on global campaigns, travelling first class to Japan, enjoying lavish client dinners and all the office goodies one could dream about. … but she wasn’t living into her fullest potential, she was bored to tears, and every day turning up for work felt like a struggle.
She couldn’t find her voice, she didn’t really know what she actually excelled in and felt like she was shrinking violet daily. She knew there was a higher purpose calling her…just where the heck was it! ??
That woman was ME.
I stuck it out in Advertising, taking on some freelancing gigs, dropped out entirely and did a brief stint in a bank (??) because I was avoiding my calling entirely and preferring to sit in 100% funk and misery.
I started making shoes to work with my hands and trying to figure out what creativity meant for me.
Recession and other things cut that short and then I came home one night and thought WTF, this is BS.
Out came the post-it notes and I started hacking away at my life, my skills and then an introduction from a friend to have a chat with her friend, who had been made redundant, to burst this sad bubble.
So we chatted, I helped him with some styling for an interview and we talked about work woes. I sprinkled a bit of advice and asked some questions….a week later he said wow! You’ve changed my life, I got the job, I worked out some big things. Can I intro you to a friend who needs help too? I said yes sure and then one became four and more ??
Like you, I’d always loved helping others, and diving deep into personal development work and philosophy. And, eventually, I began to follow where that call led.
My search for more led me to stretch beyond the confines of my mind and explore a range different practices and tools from coaching, psychology, positive psychology and which shone a light on the areas of my life where I’d been putting on a crappy mask and only showing the world what I thought it wanted to see.
But beyond that… the tools empowered and enabled me to listen to my higher self and start helping others more too. As I ventured deeper into myself, I realised something: I could keep living the good-on-paper life I thought I should be living and continue to be the perfect, polished version of myself I thought the world ( and my parents) expected… or I could carve out this happier way of working that I’d been seeking and help others too.
I’m grateful to tell you that I chose option B. ??
I said, "HELL YES!" to life in a BIG way. I got way outside my comfort zone, let go of the things in my life and work that weren’t serving me (as hard as that was to let go!), and made the biggest investments in myself and completely changed my own life.
And from that place, I’m the badass, happy, smiley woman you see today! Working with incredible brands and companies shaping their cultures, coaching thousands of individuals to make massive leaps and sharing my mission to create a LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT revolution! I mean can you believe it…little Sammy on the TedX stage!
Anyway, it’s been a long and winding road for me and to be honest at times I wish there was a silver bullet that would have shot me to where I am now immediately! But alas it took years of finding, creating, studying and growing and I want to shortcut your struggle and share all of my rich learnings, wisdom and teachings from mentors to steer you to success.
Marinate on this story over the Christmas period, in between lots of food and drink! And I shall see you in the New Year ready to kick ass and take action in 2021.
Great, Samantha Clarke! Thank you for the invitation, we will definitely try to watch your performance. We would like to point out that we look forward to your participation. We are sure you will be able to rock the party of tedx speakers. Good luck to you!
