I have always wanted to travel to Europe and experience its diverse and rich culture and history. But I never had the opportunity or the courage to do it until last month, when I decided to take a leap of faith and go on a solo trip. It was one of the best decisions I ever made, and I want to share with you some of the lessons and insights I gained from this amazing adventure.
My trip lasted for two weeks, and I visited six countries: France, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and the Vatican City. I planned my itinerary carefully, but I also left some room for spontaneity and surprises. I wanted to see as much as possible, but also enjoy each moment and savor each experience.
As I reflect on my trip, I can divide it into three main themes or lessons that I learned from visiting different places in Europe. For each theme or lesson, I will give you couple of examples of places or experiences that illustrate it.
Theme 1: The diversity and richness of European culture and history
One of the things that impressed me the most about Europe was how each country had its own unique identity and heritage, but also how they were connected and influenced by each other. Every country, city, and even village has its own unique identity, traditions, and stories. I was fascinated by the variety and beauty of the architecture, art, cuisine, music, and languages that I encountered in my travels.
Paris: The city of lights and love is also a city of culture and history. I was awestruck by the famous landmarks and artworks that I saw in person, such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, the Notre Dame Cathedral, and the Arc de Triomphe. I also enjoyed taking a cruise along the Seine river, browsing through the book stalls, and sampling some of the delicious french desserts.
The Netherlands: The land of tulips and windmills is also a land of innovation and creativity. I learned about how the Dutch people have adapted to their environment and created ingenious solutions for water management, agriculture, and transportation. I also visited some of the charming towns and villages, such as Amsterdam, Volendam, Edam and Zaanse Schans, where I saw how cheese and wooden shoes are made.
Munich: The capital of Bavaria is also a capital of culture and history. I visited some of the stunning palaces and museums that showcase the legacy of the royal family and the art scene. I also experienced some of the traditional festivals and events, ate pretzels, and listened to live music.
Theme 2: The beauty and adventure of nature and outdoor activities
Another thing that impressed me about Europe was how beautiful and adventurous its nature and outdoor activities are. I love being outdoors and exploring new places, so I was happy to find many opportunities to do so in my trip. I saw some of the most breathtaking landscapes and scenery that I have ever seen, and I also tried some fun and exciting activities that challenged me physically and mentally.
Mount Titlis: This is one of the highest peaks in Switzerland, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Alps. To get there, you have to take a cable car that rotates 360 degrees, giving you a spectacular view of the mountains and valleys. On top of the mountain, you can walk on a suspension bridge, visit an ice cave, or ride a chair flyer that takes you over a glacier.
Switzerland: This is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe, where you can find many natural wonders and attractions. I took a chocolate making course in Interlaken, where I learned how to make delicious Swiss chocolates from scratch. I also explored the Interlaken and Grindelwald, where I saw waterfalls, lakes, forests, and meadows.
Pisa: This is one of the most famous cities in Italy, where you can see one of the most iconic landmarks in the world: the leaning tower of Pisa. I climbed up the tower's 294 steps and enjoyed a stunning view of the city and its surroundings. I also visited some of the other monuments in Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles), such as the cathedral, the baptistery, and the cemetery.
Theme 3: The challenge and reward of traveling alone and meeting new people
The third theme or lesson that I learned from my trip was how traveling alone can be both challenging and rewarding. It was challenging because I had to rely on myself for everything: planning, booking, navigating, communicating, budgeting, etc. It was also challenging because sometimes I felt lonely or homesick, especially when things did not go as expected or when I faced difficulties or problems. But it was also rewarding because it helped me grow as a person and a professional. It taught me how to be more independent, confident, adaptable, resourceful, and resilient. It also taught me how to be more open-minded, curious, respectful, and appreciative of other cultures and perspectives. And it gave me the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends along the way. For example, I watched a football match in Paris with some locals who invited me to join them at a pub. They taught me some French words and phrases, and we had a great time cheering for our teams. I also joined a winery tour in Florence with some other solo travelers who shared their stories and experiences with me. We tasted different wines and learned about their production and history. And finally, I visited the Vatican City with a group of pilgrims who were very kind and friendly to me. They showed me around the St Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel paintings.
In conclusion, traveling to Europe was a life-changing experience for me. It helped me grow as a person and a professional in many ways. It showed me the benefits and challenges of solo travel, which are both valuable for personal development. And it gave me memories and lessons that I will cherish forever.
