My Social Internship Journey

Introduction

I am N Lakshmi Gayathri , a first-year B. Tech student in the CSE Department at KL University. Having recently completed my first year, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in a social internship during the summer holidays. This internship, in association with KL GLUG and SwechaAP , provided me with invaluable insights.

My Internship Journey

After completing my first year, we were informed that we needed to complete a social internship. I registered with KL GLUG and joined their Telegram group. Every day, I attended the sessions from 6 to 7 in the evening. The mentors taught us what to do and how to carry out our tasks, and we had the opportunity to clear our doubts. In this internship we have to contribute to some of the open platforms such as Open Street Map (OSM) , Mapillary , Every Door and Wikipedia Edits . Through the KL GLUG members, I learned about all of this.

Open Street Map, Every Door and Mapillary

In this journey , I learned about open street map and mapped up-to 50 buildings , roads, government buildings , government schools , etc... of my village in OSM. We all did this contributions with the help of my klglug mentors. After completion of my mapping in OSM I used Every door app and mapped temples , shops , etc... of my village. Next, with the help of the Mapillary app, I took photos of my village roads covering up to 5 kilometers.

Wikipedia Contributions

We made significant contributions to Wikipedia as well. First I took my father's help to take pictures of some government buildings and temples and uploaded them to Wikimedia Commons. It was a big task because, while taking the pictures, many people in my village were curious and asked me what I was doing. I said that this is related to my social internship form klglug. After taking the pictures i uploaded all these in wikimedia commons in both telugu and english languages.

Bala Swecha Activity

I had an amazing time teaching students about computers for three days at S D N R Z P H School KommuChikkala . They were eager to learn and so friendly, which made it really memorable for me. I'm thankful to the school principal for the opportunity. These days with the 6th, 7th and 8th standard students gave me beautiful memories that I'll cherish. I conducted some quizzes regarding my sessions about computers. And they want some more new things to learn from me. This is most and best activity in this social internship journey. By this activity, I improved my teaching skills. The students were amazing, and even the principal attended my sessions and gave me an appreciation letter.

Skills Gained

• Mapping Skills: Learned how to contribute to and edit open-source maps. Improved understanding of geographical features and mapping conventions.
• Data Collection: Acquired skills in collecting and recording local data effectively. Learned various methods of conducting surveys and collecting relevant data.

• Teaching Skills: Enhanced my ability to teach and explain technical concepts to students. Improved my communication skills through interactions with students.

Conclusion

During my social internship with SwechaAP and KL GLUG, I gained insights into OSM, Every Door and Mapillary from my mentors. This experience enhanced my skills in mapping and collaborating on open-source projects. It played a pivotal role in both my personal and professional development, expanding my knowledge and abilities?significantly. I had the best opportunity to learn all these from klglug members.
