My Secret To Success: Treat People With Respect

My Secret To Success: Treat People With Respect

I've been in business for over 30 years, and throughout this fact still remains: I'm a people person. I love talking to people, listening to their stories, sharing words of wisdom and discovering new talent. Which is exactly why I got into recruitment.

The art of communication is a great skill to have because if you can speak confidently people will listen, and are more likely to gravitate towards you. But it doesn't stop there.

People always ask what's my secret to success, and I always give the same answer; I understand people and I respect people.

It doesn't matter whether you're one of my CEO's running a recruitment business, or a graduate recruiter fresh out of university- every role has a specific purpose and adds value within the organisation.

So, here are some tips for demonstrating respect in the workplace

Listen:

There's nothing worse than being ignored. It is absolutely crucial that you listen to your team, and encourage them to share creative ideas and opinions. Taking the time to listen will prevent miscommunication, will make a message more clearly understood and can help reduce the amount of frustration within the team. Plus you'll end up with ideas you never even thought about.

Give credit where credit is due:

Everyone likes to feel as though they're adding value so it's really important that you recognise the great things your team members do day to day. Giving credit is a driver of high performance, it's key to retaining talent and making people feel fulfilled.

Offer your time:

People respect people who give them time. This is something I learnt very early on in my career. I schedule an update with my team every week to go through what they have on their plate, because I know they appreciate my time and effort. By offering up this team, and embodying an open door structure, my team feel respected.

I'm a workaholic, I'm always thinking of new ideas and wanting to pursue everything all at once. But I always make time to be respectful and treat others how I'd like to be treated. People do business with people they like. If you're rude, you won't go very far in life.

Great to hear how you treat others. This seems to be lost with some people.

Thanks for the insight. Taking a real interest and having respect for the opinions of all members of your team is a crucial attribute, IMHO, for any successful leader. So, are the days of the 'sackings will continue until morale improves' culture on their last legs?
