My Secret Globetrotting Address Book

My Secret Globetrotting Address Book

Design royalty, Kelly Hoppen, shares her favourite adventures at home and abroad

When I travel, I’m never without

I never travel without my phone! It’s hard to imagine going anywhere without it these days as it’s such an essential tool for staying connected. I love it for keeping in touch with family, listening to music, but also with running a global business, it is the best way to keep tabs on what’s going on and speak with my team whilst I’m on the go.

Preferred hangout close to home?

Nature nurtures my mind so I love spending time in Hyde Park when I can. It’s so important for me to keep active and spend time outside, clearing my mind and gathering my thoughts. I find it's best to go at 6am as I love the peaceful atmosphere it provides, helping me escape from city life to find a moment of calm.

Best global getaway for design inspiration?

I’ve always been inspired by elements of Eastern and Western design as it provides such harmony to a space. I recently travelled to Tel Aviv which is so rich in history and culture, and just adored the use of natural materials such as wood and stone in their design. I also love getting away to the beautiful mountains in France for inspiration, with its stunning natural beauty, rustic charm and traditional alpine elements like exposed wood beams, stone fireplaces and cosy textiles.

City pad or country pile?

Both. Balance is everything. I enjoy the convenience of city living, the energy it brings, and the endless opportunities it creates. I spend most of my time in London and there are so many aspects of the city that I couldn't live without. But it is important to have balance. I value any opportunity I get to escape to the country for some much needed relaxation and rejuvenation, surrounded by fresh air, nature, and beautiful views. I appreciate the benefits of both tremendously.

Style trend you’d like to bring back?

I’m fascinated by the connection between what people wear and what their interiors look like. If you look at Fred Astaire and Marilyn Monroe for example, you can see how the combination of Art Deco and Gatsby-esque glamour reflects that era's interiors. I would love this style to be reintroduced with modern influences and a chic finish.
