My second job interview
Randhir Pandey
25+ years of Expertise in Sales, Business Development and Entrepreneurship in the Building Material Industry.
Whilst working in my first job & also pursuing my Graduation, lot of work life balance was supposed to be maintained by me. Fortunately, it was a morning college & I hardly missed any classes (75% attendance was mandatory to appear for exams) & my professors also appreciated my efforts of, ”earning while learning”.
One of the B2B customer, I was servicing during my first job recommended to one of his principle’s to appoint me for their Organization for the region as they were looking for a Sales Person since long, but couldn’t find as per their requirement. During one of the visits of the Area Manager the B2B customer called me up for a formal chat & he was impressed & recommended my candidature to his Management. I was called for the interview to the HO on a Saturday & hence left home Friday afternoon. The GM had some personal work on Saturday & hence the RM called up at my residence (since there were no pagers/ cell phones in those days) & suggested to cancel my journey. There was no way to communicate to me, as by the time someone could reach the railway station, the train had left.

I reached the Office the other day morning & the interview was conducted by the RM for almost an hour or so. They just wanted to see my communication skills (verbal & written) in English language. Once he got assured & confident, I was confirmed for the job. It was very difficult to find a candidate speaking fluent English from a “C” class town & no one wanted to shift from metro’s to smaller towns in those days.
Later I came to know that the Company had organized several interviews but couldn’t get a candidate who could communicate in English & one of the best sales person from the region said to the GM, ”Sir agar mujhe angrezi aati naa toh aap meri jagah hote aur main aap ki kursi par”. Since, it was going to be a MNC, hence English speaking candidate was mandatory.
