My Sales Diary - Chapter 4

My entry into the corporate world is a perfect example of Power that Networking can create. In 1992, I was looking for a job, asked my friend, who in turn told another friend, who in turn told his GM to find a job for me. A senior person from a top-notch financial services company had just moved in GM’s neighbourhood. He requested him to meet me. The interview was arranged. In the interview I was given a task to gather some information about the Hyderabad market and the companies and submit by the evening. My ability to connect and network came handy and I submitted all that I was asked for by evening. I have been and always will be grateful to Dr. L. Ravindran for seeing potential in me and despite me being the weakest candidate from the educational qualifications’ parameters, he chose to recruit me. The rest is history.

The learnings from this episode of my entry into the corporate world:

  • Networking as a tool can be a game changer.
  • Important to transfer positive vibes in the interview and not just the paper resume.
  • Treat the task given as a challenge and give your best shot.
  • Focus on the efforts and not the outcome.
  • We need a bit of luck and someone who is ready to punt on you.
