My Legacy: Re-defining Success

There was a time in which driving this car would make me truly happy, and define my success.
Not anymore.
I remember driving past my old highschool in a 2006 Ford GT, thinking I’d finally done “ok” by society's standards. But as I've grown and changed, so has my outlook - and how I define my success.
Recently I've started to gauge my success and happiness by the difference I make in others’ lives. Pushing an employee outside their comfort zone to their limits, and seeing them gleeful at the results makes me thrive. Rewarding them for their hard work and effort, causing them to like what they do and consistently go the extra mile is what makes me warm and fuzzy. As I've aged, helping the less fortunate makes me far happier than a material possession can.
I recently discovered that working on leaving a legacy of kindness and respect is far more important than a fancy car, nice house, and the like. After all, we all end up in the same size wooden box. . . minus the material possessions.
In my opinion, liking oneself and what you do is the basis of success.
I think I am successful because I work hard at seeing a bigger picture: we are all on earth for a reason, and all have a different purpose. Connect this with love and compassion, and everything will eventually unfold.
This, friends, is my newfound definition of success.

6 年Jerry, per my earlier LI response. I should have been dead years ago; as such, every day is a gift. That’s all. Not inspiring; simply fortunate.

7 年Funny how one's outlook on life changes! Personal advancement is all good and well, but watching someone that perhaps you have mentored or had a hand in, make strides in their own capabilities or mindset, brings much greater gratification to my way of thinking as well.
