My Readings in 2024 - the Story Thus far

This year, triggered by Goodreads, I embarked on a transformative literary journey, setting an ambitious goal to read 24 books. As the year hit halfway, I have already delved into 10 distinct and enlightening works.
From historical conflicts to the intricacies of personal change, these readings have served as gateways to diverse knowledge and self-discovery.
The variety of authors and topics across these 10 books has provided a balanced mix of cultural, historical, and personal insights. Some themes covered are exploring longstanding geopolitical tensions, celebrating everyday cultural experiences, deep emotional connections through fictional narratives, and strategies for minimalistic living in our digital age.
The Books and Their Impact:
The Shortest History of Israel and Palestine by Michael Scott-Baumann offers an insightful look into the deep-rooted conflict and the historical narratives that shape current events. It is recommended reading for anyone who wishes to understand the dynamics of the acrimonious relationship between Israel and Palestine.
Here There and Everywhere by Sudha Murty - I picked up this book because I was curious about the amazing popularity of Sudha Murty's books. This book, written with simplicity and grace, brings to light the beauty and diversity of India through engaging stories that depict simple yet profound life lessons.
Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami—Murakami has always intrigued me. I found his Wild Sheep Chase obtuse and mildly weird. I have often wondered what accounts for his legendary popularity. This work showed me the reason! It delves into themes of love, loss, and nostalgia, showing how literature can touch the depths of our emotions.
Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport—Ten weeks ago, I deactivated my Facebook account as a direct result of reading this book. It has made my life richer, more productive, and calmer. Cal Newport (whose other works include Deep Work and has an excellent podcast, Deep Life) provides practical advice on managing our digital lives, urging a minimalist approach to technology that prioritizes deep work and meaningful interaction.
The Innocent by Ian McEwan - Ian McEwan is my all-time favourite author. In this book, he has explored the dark and complex nature of human relationships set against Cold War espionage.

The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober by Catherine Gray - Revealed the transformative power of sobriety through personal anecdotes and research, highlighting the benefits of a sober lifestyle.
Black Dogs by Ian McEwan - Tackled the psychological and philosophical questions raised by personal and historical events, intertwining personal trauma with broader societal issues.
The Half-Known Life In Search of Paradise by Pico Iyer - A brilliant travelogue that explores spirituality and the meaning of religion. Questioned the concept of paradise, encouraging a deep reflection on what constitutes a fulfilling life.
Dethroned by John Zubrzycki - A brilliant account of how Sardar Patel and a civil servant unified all the princely states into India. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the historical complexities and intrigues of Indian royalty, showing how power and heritage shape societies.
India Grows at Night by Gurcharan Das - Discussed the paradoxical growth of India, proposing that despite its flawed governance, the country progresses through the strength and spirit of its people.
Reading is not just an escape but a deep dive into the complexities of human experiences and knowledge. The challenge of reading 24 books in a year tests my discipline and dedication but also rewards me with profound personal growth and wisdom.
With every book I finish, I'm one step closer to fulfilling my commitment, inspired continuously by the transformative power of reading.
