My Quest to Becoming Fit at 50 (Q2 2024 Update)

My Quest to Becoming Fit at 50 (Q2 2024 Update)

I joined a medically supervised weight loss program at a children’s hospital when I was 9.?? Despite gaining knowledge about calories and macronutrients early on, it’s been a constant struggle to engage in consistently healthy behaviors.? I developed a habit of dieting whenever I would inch up toward severe obesity, but I always made my financial goals a priority above my health goals.

?

There was a method to my madness.? My study of human health and medical progress gave me confidence that if I could become fit at 50 and stay that way, I could reverse all the negative effects of being overweight in my younger years.? In contrast, if I waited to achieve financial success, I would not have the benefits of compounding over a greater timespan.

?

I always dreamed of living long enough to take a magic pill that would usurp my poor choices.? GLP-1 medication has been a game-changer and made it easier than ever for me to eat less.? I finally get the sensation of being full without overeating.

?

I just turned 48 and my weight is the lowest it’s been since my wedding half my lifetime ago.? I cycled off the medication in December and continued to lose weight on a carnivore diet. I also did a 5-day water fast, not to lose weight, but to challenge myself while getting the benefits of autophagy.??

?

The past 12 months have been the most challenging I can remember, so I wanted to remind myself of my mental fortitude, ability to be persistent, and to achieve goals when I have control over the outcome.

?

When I completed my executive physical right after my fast, I was disappointed to see that my CAC score skyrocketed.? I thought I was taking appropriate action to reverse my cardiovascular disease, but it has not been sufficient.? My friend Joe has spent a lot of time researching heart health and recommend BaleDoneen Method get me on the right path. ?They have a track record of preventing heart attacks and strokes. ?I completed a battery of tests and will get their advice in a few weeks.

?

My Fit at 50 checklist includes having blood tests in the normal range for all my markers and getting my cardiovascular age to be equal or less than my biological age.? It also includes having bodyfat under 18%, completing 15 consecutive pull ups, 100 pushups, a 2-minute wall sit, and a 2-minute plank all while improving my flexibility.

?

What else would you suggest I add to my list?

?

This quarter I left the house more often.? It reminded me of life before Covid.? Over the past few years I’ve become more introverted, but I wanted to push myself back into social settings.

?

I attended four EO events, including a special evening with Romero BRITTO? that was amazing. My Forum held a local retreat where I experienced a sound bath for the first time.? It was a cool experience I would gladly do again.? Since our forum was dwindling to five members after our retreat, we welcomed two new members right away.

?

In addition to meeting fellow YPO members over lunch, I hosted YPO and EO zooms for Matthew Pollard , author of Introvert’s Edge.? I also brought the founder of the non-profit Clarion Intelligence Network, which disrupted 625 terror events as a result of monitoring over 5 million social media accounts, aboard The Ark to share how they infiltrate chat groups and deliver thousands of critical intelligence pieces to the appropriate authorities.?

?

Our other philanthropic activities included meeting the deserving Eda and Cliff Viner Community Scholars we awarded a 4-year scholarship to UCF at the ceremony for all 41 Class of 2028 scholarship recipients.

?

Amanda got to participate in the 600th Dec My Room (where she decorates hospital rooms for long term patients), continued her baby holding at the NICU, and just kicked off a “mangoes for mommas” fundraiser.? After harvesting a few dozen mangoes, she realized we could offer a pick-your-own mango activity where all proceeds will go to support a local women’s collaboration where they make gift baskets for mom’s going through a rough patch (cancer diagnosis, loss of a spouse/child, etc.).?

?

I had less speaking engagements than desired, but two highlights were being invited back to Gobundance for a special session with their “Over $10 million” group and an interview of David Metzler, who shared his lessons learned losing $100 million.

?

Freedom Family Office is wrapping a rebranding project, where we tightened up our messaging and sales process.? We closed our first lead that came directly from digital marketing, a goal we have had for years but didn’t prioritize investing in until recently.? I welcomed a new executive assistant Judy, and a new investment analyst, Joel.? Both are already making valuable contributions.

?

I scheduled a one-day trip to Tallahassee to visit Natural Life , a franchise brand I invested in.? A first was missing my flight that was delayed until 11pm because when I arrived at 9:45pm, TSA was CLOSED!? What?!?? The gate agent was happy to tell me I should have read that on the website…

?

Passover is always a reminder of our Jewish history as slaves and persecuted people.? It was especially somber to have a seat for the hostages at the table.? At my nephew’s bar mitzvah, I thought about all the Jews in time that have been killed, yet here we are 5,000 years later still performing this sacred ritual against all odds.

?

My birthday was made more special when my brother Andy Rosenfarb, ND, DTCM, L.Ac. came to town.? We went out boating, drove to Naples for his buddies’ surprise 50th, and enjoyed being together.

?

Jared had a busy spring with soccer matches and tournaments in Orlando, AP exams, and SATs.? He invited his friends for a day on the Ark for a belated birthday celebration and to mark the end of his Junior year.

Eden was flying around for fun.? We went to NYC for her to attend THREE bat mitzvah’s in one weekend!? While she was with her bunkmates, I was able to have dinner with friends, sleep by my parents, have lunch with family, and take my nieces for a quick visit to the Natural History museum.?

?

Then, Amanda took Eden to PA for bat mitzvah (which meant travelling home on Mother’s Day).?? Coincidentally, Eden was back to Philly just a few weeks later for a 7th grade class trip that she loved.? She also invited her friends for an end of year boat outing which was a wonderful experience.

?

As I have been sharing, some of my real estate investments have been decimated by rising interest rates, rising insurance costs, and reduced values.? We sold an asset in Atlanta at a total loss.? It has been gut wrenching, heartbreaking and ego bruising.? Our net worth is down by millions while the purchasing power of a dollar has gone down, too – so a double whammy.

?

Despite the financial setback, I have been embracing my winner’s mindset.? Not all champions have undefeated records.? While I’ve felt more anxious, depressed, lethargic and sad the past 12 months than even in my life, I have been actively leaning in to all my blessings (aka spending like nothing’s changed).

?

We took a family trips to London and the Cotswolds' and then went to Dallas to see the US Men’s soccer team beat Bolivia in the Copa America.? Jared and I went on a boys trip to Atlanta and were disappointed with the Panama loss.? Then Amanda, Jared and I met Amanda’s soccer loving dad in Kansas City to watch them beat Uruguay.? On to the next round!! GO USA!!

?

?

Cheers to a happy 4th!
