My proven 3 step Roadmap to your next promotion!
Beth Hocking - Leadership Coach & Career Strategist

My proven 3 step Roadmap to your next promotion!

I spent 20 years in sales, closing 6,7 & 8 figure deals.

Yet I couldn't sell myself.

There were a couple of times throughout my career that I knew I was ready for promotion.

I was almost always the hardest working person in the room. Yet I couldn't get to the next level.

And I couldn't figure out why.

I felt frustrated, unseen, unheard and undervalued for what I brought to the table.

There were people around me, who I honestly saw as not quite as good as me (I know, I know high opinion of myself!) who were progressing and yet I wasn't.

I learnt that what got me to where I was then, wasn't good enough to go beyond.

Block out some time to strategize your next move(s).

If you don't, not only will you be stuck where you are, you'll begin to spiral in a downwards motion. Growing more frustrated and negative about your situation.

Once you recognise you are in this situation, you've got a choice to make:

One, do nothing and essentially get mad at everyone around you.

Play the blame game, resent your team, your boss and your company - to the point where you'll never be progressing internally as your attitude stinks!

Or Two, block some time out of your busy agenda and start following some of my prompts and suggestions from this email.

You'll be taking action towards your progression, you'll have a clearer picture of what action steps you need to do and conversations you need to have in order to facilitate your next move.

If you are ready for the latter, I'm going to share the exact steps I took to get me out of my slump and into my next promotion (and pay rise!).

Read on...

#1. Reflect

If you don't know where you are, how will you know where you are going?

  1. How are you perceived currently? Gain some feedback from some trusted allies. This could be your boss, your team or other key stakeholders.
  2. Reflect on your achievements and progress so far in the role. What impact have you had? What can you be proud of? What have you implemented? Who are you now vs. who were you at the start of this role?
  3. What's the next exciting step for you? Knowing what you want next and why you want it is vital. Don't always assume the obvious, be open minded, what aligns to you and your current priorities? What lights you up and excites you?

#2. Courage

Those who wait for the confidence to speak up, will be waiting forever...

  1. Confidence is built over time by taking small steps of courage. Everything you've ever done that you are proud of, you had to do for the first time once. It took courage - so I know you have it!
  2. Start building a 'ta-dah' list of all the things you have achieved at work so far. (waaaaay more fun than a 'do-to list!). You are building your portfolio or resume this way too. If you get into situations that are challenging - go back and read your 'Ta-dah' list to remind yourself just how badass you are already!
  3. Believe in yourself. It's crazy just how much our minds play tricks on us and we believe that Inner Critic voice in our heads that tells us we can't or that we don't deserve it. As Henry Ford most famously says 'Whether we think we can, or think we cannot. We are right'. So start choosing to believe that you can do that next level role and that it's meant for you. The more you believe it, the more others around you will as well.

#3. Speak up.

50% of getting to the next level is your strengths and skillset and the other 50% is about how you talk about them.

  1. Build your value pitch. No-one else is you and that is your superpower. No-one else has your lived experience plus your skills and talents combined. Share these with pride, why they make you the best person to be considered for the next role, what you bring to the table, what you've achieved so far and where you add value.
  2. Advocate for yourself. Throw your hat in the ring - speak up about the opportunities you are hoping to be considered for. Ask your boss what it would take and how can they support you to get there?
  3. Play the field. Recognise that your boss may not always have your best interests at heart (sorry, I hate to break it to you...). Are there other stakeholders you could chat with? What about looking outside your organisation? How about putting your thought leadership about your industry out there on linkedin to network and get your name out there by casting your net wider?

Armed with my road map, you now have no reason not to go for that next level promotion.

Don't wait, like I did.

I share my mistakes and breakthroughs in the hope that you can progress much further, much faster than I did. And of course if you need some additional support, I'm ready to chat when you are to see if 1:1 coaching is something you are ready to explore:

Great strategy. Unfortunately, the idea that quality speaks for itself is mostly incorrect. It’s essential to speak up for oneself.
