My Personal Training Journey

My Personal Training Journey

?? I became a personal trainer 7 years ago because I desperately wanted to help people on their health and fitness journeys after it had pretty much saved my life!

As a kid I was really active I played comp netball, tennis, softball, swam and danced.

In my teen years and into my early 20’s I chose clubbing and bands over sports but I did train at the gym and let’s face it I was burning some serious calories on those dance floors! ????

At 26 I had my first baby, Jake and 3 years later I had Elisha. I went back to work when Jake was only 6 months old and El at 8 months. My focus was pretty much on my family and work and I would throw in some exercise here and there but I never committed to anything for any length of time because I would always feel guilty for putting myself first, which I now know was wrong on many levels.

Almost 10 years ago I left my volatile marriage. For the first 8 or so months before we sold the family home I couch surfed or stayed at my parents or besties homes. Although it was disruptive I was ok with it because I was so grateful for the support from my loved ones.

We finally sold our home and my kids and I moved into an apartment. I was happy to be starting my new life but there was the stresses of being a single mum and full time one at that due to my kids dad moving overseas for over 3 years.

I was working full time in the inner city and I was obviously busier than ever! I started to wake up every morning at about 3am gasping for air, I felt like I was dying and this would happen every night! The anxiety I was feeling every night was taking it’s toll and I personally wasn’t keen on taking meds. I had taken up jogging again because I knew how good exercise had made me feel as a kid and not long after I joined a gym where I would train every morning at 5am while my kids were sleeping without fail. I really focused on my health consistently for the first time since having them and eventually the anxiety began to ease.

My early morning runs and training at the gym was what got me through the toughest time of my life and before I knew it I was giving friends and colleagues health and fitness advice. I loved helping people and I decided that I would do my PT course and a couple of years later I was taking bootcamp classes part time, I then worked for Virgin Active full time for over 3 years and almost 2 years ago I started my own PT business “BusyBods”.

People thought I was crazy becoming a PT at the ripe old age of 40 (yes it’s old in the PT world) but it was the best career decision I have ever made. I have helped hundreds of women and men over the years shred kilos, gain muscle and more importantly helped them believe in themselves when they didn’t.

When I first started out my main focus was exercise and nutrition but over the years I have discovered that for optimal health we need to make sure we are incorporating downtime to destress, 7 to 9 hours sleep, living in the present, giving to others, gratitude, personal development and surrounding yourself with positive people who support you and your dreams!
