My Personal Story
Mike Smeaton
Searching for a way off the Corporate Highway? I am here to help you explore Self Sufficiency. Let's talk!
I have truly lived a “blessed’ life. From starting my 1st business in the mid to late
70’s. I got married, started a family, tried to figure out who I was and what I
would be in the future. I found out I was not as smart as I thought I was. I realized
I needed to improve as a husband, father and businessperson. My 1st business
failed regarding generating enough income for my family. I went to work for
Corporate America and quickly succeeded but felt I needed to be on my own
again. So, I risked everything again and started a new business in the early 80’s, I
went to 6 banks to finance my vision and received the same response…NO! I
finally found a Bank that believed in me and my vision for the company. The
Company grew very quickly. But I recalled something my dad told me years
before. He said “Mike, more businesses fail when business is good rather than
bad.” My dad was right! My increase in inventory, receivables and employee
headcount was killing my cash flow. I needed answers, I needed to be educated! I
went back to school, I educated myself in the areas of Industrial Distribution and
developed Processes and Tools for my business. I developed a great Team of
people who worked very hard for me and it was time for me to invest in them.
We all became very successful! I started several other companies in the mid 90’s. I
was on top until my wife of 30 years passed away from cancer. I found out I could
not do my job anymore and decided to sell my business to my kids and a couple
of key employees. I thought retirement would be pretty cool in my early 50’s, I
would golf every day! That only lasted a few weeks!
I took a “temporary” job as President-CEO of a Cooperative; it was a Buying-
Marketing Group of independently owned safety equipment distributors in North
America. As a result, my new boss was really 60+ distributors. What I thought was
“temporary” ended up lasting 17 years! I really enjoyed working with all the
owners, I learned a great deal from them and they would probably say they learned
from me. I developed, coached and mentored a great team, I know it is the best
of people I have ever been exposed to, as a team we grew the business from $60
MM to $300 MM + and I retired again! But again, that did not last long!
I wanted to do more! I have a great deal of passion and drive to help others
succeed and prosper. Over the past 10 + years, I quit playing golf and got active in
my Church and a handful of local Charities that I believe in and to use my God
given time, gifts and talents to help them achieve their own God given mission’s.
I realized that I needed to start my “last company” The name is Encouraging the
Entrepreneurial Spirit. I am now a Career Ownership Coach / Career Transition

3 年Congratulations Mike, an amazing story!
Retired. Yet still busy. Been working very hard to balance time between my company, beach days, lots of, golf, riding my Harley, travel, occasional day drinking, hanging with friends and live-in grandkids. Lots of fun
3 年Wonderful story Mike! I can relate as I "retired" on Thursday 12/31 and launched my new company on Monday January 4. I do love golf and play a lot, but I'm way too young to not keep working. Anyone who works with you will benefit greatly from your expertise! Have fun!
