My Path to Love - By: Sharon Kuller

This story was written by Sharon Kuller and not altered or edited by Lewis Roca.

After dating men and women during college and realizing that, at the very least, I was bi-sexual but most likely Lesbian, I still dearly wanted to have children.?This was in the 1970s, and I honestly didn’t think I would meet any women interested in raising children.?I also did not want to disappoint my grandfather, who was very concerned that I would be a spinster if I wasn’t married by my early 20s.???

In 1978, I met Tim and, we fell in love.?We married in 1980 and had a beautiful family by 1985. In the mid-90s, I met a woman who rekindled feelings I had long tamped down, and by 1997, I was divorced.?Fortunately, Tim and I are still close friends as we share children and two wonderful grandsons.

?

I met Marty via an AOL LGBT website in early 1999.?She lived in Michigan, and I was in Arizona.?We chatted for several months, finally talked on the phone, and she came to visit in August and again in October of 1999.?True to the myths of Lesbian relationships, a U-Haul was rented (it was our second date after all – LOL), and Marty and I were together in Arizona by January 2000.?The rest, as they say, is history.

?

When same-sex marriage became legal in 2016, we said our vows before a large (150!!) group of family and friends, with a Rabbi and a Pastor officiating.?We married under a chuppah (canopy) made from my Great-Grandfather’s tallit (prayer shawl) that he brought over from Ukraine in the early 1900s. It was a wonderful, loving ceremony filled with joy and laughter.

I have always been fortunate that my family loves me regardless of who I love and have welcomed Marty into our family with open and loving arms, and her family with me.

Seeing how my community has grown with acceptance from so many corners has been wonderful. Further, I am out and proud, something I feared would never happen back in the 1990s when I first embarked on this adventure as an adult.
