Introducing blockfiles.io

I'm using this newsletter now to share an upcoming project and idea. If you have any thoughts or would like to participate, please let me know. ??

This project will be my next hobby project. The project's point is primarily to teach me and, most importantly: to be fun.

What is blockfiles.io?

Right now mostly an idea with some preparations. What it *will be* is the better question:

wetransfer.com as a web3 model.

The Simple Idea

Upload a file in a web3 way, and make it available for download.

The more advanced idea

Allow the user to

• Pick a blockchain (Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism)
• Ask for an upload price (to cover gas and cost).
• Allow the user to ask for a download price. (This makes it a quasi-equivalent of gumroad for web3)
• Allow the user to upload for free in case of whistleblowing

Financials

This service will not be able to operate for free for the following reasons:

• Blockchain costs money (gas)
• IPFS costs money to pin

The user will have a few options to make this as broadly available.

All paid prices will be collected in a pool and split up as follows:

• 50% go into covering costs (including dev time in the future)
• 10% are donated to charity
• 10% are put in the whistleblower pool
• 30% are saved (I don't know yet what for, but there will be something)

Will there be an Airdrop?

Impossible to say right now. If there are all early contributors and users will naturally receive their most significant share.
