My newest book is out: Wikipedia for Business 2023: The Rules & Latest Developments that Businesses & Communicators Need to Know to Succeed. To kickoff the New Year, we updated the book with our team's findings on what has been working well, how Wikipedia and SEO work together and what you might need to change for the future in regards to Wikipedia.
A sneak peak at the introduction:?
As this article says, “Wikipedia is the place Earthlings go to tell and/or read the story of our world.” The online encyclopedia is an amalgamation of current facts, historical biographies, strange places, confusing terms, scientific occurrences, and more. It receives billions of visitors every month, is referenced in news articles, by smart assistants like Siri and Alexa, and is consistently a top search result on Google.
This isn’t information that you should let pass by without a second thought. Google hasn’t; it’s paying attention to Wikipedia in new, costly ways. In June 2022, Google signed a commercial agreement to start paying for Wikipedia content that’s displayed in Knowledge Panels and search results. The goal, according to Wikimedia Enterprise, is to provide more comprehensive, reliable, and secure data to “improve the user experience…beyond our own websites.”
Wikipedia is being threaded into SEO and Google is happy to pay to move the process along.

Now, this isn’t the first time that Wikipedia has affected SEO, but its impact is growing. That makes it more important than ever to incorporate the encyclopedia into your digital marketing plans. It not only can, but should be part of your long-term strategies for brand growth.
This is easier said than done. Working with Wikipedia isn’t straightforward. It changes, minute-by-minute, and it takes a flexible and keen mind to keep up with it. Learning the ins-and-outs of editing takes time, especially as the general guidelines can be interpreted differently by every Wikipedian on the planet. You never know exactly what you’re going to find, but when you piece things together with a well-crafted strategy, it’s amazing to see what can happen.
To help you get started, I’ve added a new section to this annual report, one that focuses entirely on SEO strategies for Wikipedia based on the latest developments. If you want to drive more traffic to your website and improve search results, this is the information that you need.
It might surprise you, and I hope it inspires some new goals and paths forward. We’re all impacted by Wikipedia every time we access Google. Let’s find out why and what we can do about it.
If this intrigues you, I am hosting an exclusive webinar on January 25th for those who purchase the book this month.
