My new essay on Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Work (October 2016)

On October 2016, I published on the Italian Quarterly "Economia e Lavoro" (Carocci Publisher), a new essay on the impacts of Artificial Intelligence on the future of work. In the essay I tried to summarise some of the crucial points of the current debate on the impacts of AI related to the disruption of old and creation of new jobs in our economy. I hope this essay will result as useful contribution to discussions on the new AI and future of work, in particular in the European context, where scientific and civil awareness on these themes seems to me weaker than what we have in America. Following, I post the abstract of the essay. Please anybody interested on the issue can share with me any observation/reflection.

Abstract: soon after the end of the Great Recession, an extensive debate emerged on what determines the slow economic recovery as well as the weak creation of new jobs. Particularly in the American context, current economic research considers, as part of the problem, the on-going processes of industrial automation. The latter are disrupting a huge number of jobs by implementing the new advancements on the field of Artificial Intelligence. Machines currently substitute human jobs related to professions and tasks until recently considered a “protected domain” from the automation processes. The essay provides for an introduction on the American research that today aims at evaluating the real impact of these dynamics on future professions as well as defining general “visions” on best public policies for job creation in the age of the new Artificial Intelligence.
