My new book: Living in the future

At last! The news I’ve been waiting so anxiously to share: I have a new book coming out. Anyone who knows the hard work and enthusiasm that goes into writing a book will share my excitement and understand that I’ve thought about little else for some time now.

Viviendo en el futuro, with the subtitle “Claves sobre cómo la tecnología está cambiando el mundo” (“Some clues on how technology is changing the world”), is an analysis of how technology will impact our lives in the future, assuming we have one (a main focus is the climate emergency and how technology is the key to dealing with it). Regular readers will not be surprised to learn that the book begins with a breakdown of the current situation and how we got here, and then considers the rules that govern the evolution of technology, continuing with a discussion of how technology will change our homes, health, cities, education, banking and insurance, shopping, privacy, work and politics. Finally, I draw some conclusions about a future that, in reality, is one that we’re pretty much living in already, but that unless we act now, may not last very long. I’m currently in the process of finding a publisher for the book in English.

That said, the book isn’t about making predictions, but instead offers some hypotheses to illustrate my arguments and hopefully change people’s attitudes toward technology. I’m not just throwing a few ideas out there, and nor is my aim simply to propose topics for discussion that you may or may not agree with. Instead, this is the result of a decade’s conscientious, obsessive and prolonged work, gleaned from daily research and talking to business. As with the topics explored in my previous book, Todo va a cambiar, the ideas underlying Living in the Future have been thoroughly submitted to the critical scrutiny of the people I am fortunate to teach, from undergraduates to experienced managers, founders of companies and directors, as well as the insight (sometimes cruelly so) of readers who comment on my page.

Like my previous book, Viviendo en el futuro is published by Planeta as part of its Deusto franchise, has been edited by my good friend Roger Domingo and, as pretty much all the things I write, it has a Creative Commons BY NC license. It goes on sale in Spain on October 22, and can be reserved at AmazonFNAC or the Casa del Libro. There will be a launch event on October 22 at 7pm at the Aula Magna of IE University in Madrid, María de Molina 11, if you happen to be in Madrid or nearby and you feel like a devirtualization experience :-)
