My Mr Miyagi Moment

My Mr Miyagi Moment

I had what I would call a Mr Miyagi moment during a training session earlier this week, the session started as most of my sessions do by setting the scene and laying the foundations for getting the group to begin to think differently about how they sell and engage with their clients and prospects.

Fairly early into the session a delegate became impatient and began challenging and questioning what I was saying, hey it happens from time to time, they were looking for that silver bullet to solve all sales problems, the magic sauce to turn all opportunities into sales.

We’d spoken about the fundamentals of selling, the importance of your customers buying you and being a real and relatable person during your conversations with clients, and most importantly not being the stereotypical clichéd salesperson.

We discussed how important this is within the sales process and when you combine this with solid intelligent sales techniques and how this is the formula that makes the biggest impact on your sales results.

We had a break and the delegate made it clear he did see any value in sales training, he’d been on various courses and none of them had taught him anything, and that he wasn’t buying into what I was saying and I’d need to pull out all of the stops to convince him this training was worthwhile.

So fast forward to the next session and we began with a good old roleplay, I asked for a volunteer, I really didn’t need to ask as I knew they would put themselves forward eager to prove a point, I took on the role of salesperson and they took on the role of a difficult customer, and then it came, my Mr Miyagi moment, as the role play unfolded all of the things I had spoken to the group about came into play every challenge, every objection and moment of awkwardness was calmly handled with ease, we connected I broke down the hostility and created some good rapport and at the end, they had to admit that to use their words ”I had them and he’d?find it hard not to go ahead and say yes”.

At the next break, the delegate came up to me, offered to shake my hand, and said, “I really enjoyed that, I now get what you are saying, I took a lot from that”

“What are we covering next, I think I’m going to learn a few new things today”

And that ladies and gentlemen and why I love being a sales trainer!

Regards
