MY Motorbike Was Sliding Down the Highway on its side, with me on it, On Pure Black Ice! (1977)

I was working in Wisconsin earning money in order to pay for a motorcycle trip I was planning up to Alaska. Wintertime was just beginning to end and the roads were clear of snow. I took my motorcycle (a Honda 750 touring bike) out on the main highway and headed to work in Waukesha, Wisconsin one early morning. I was driving approximately fifty miles an hour when tragedy struck. For some reason, I had not noticed, that all of the vehicles on the highway were going extremely slow.

It was too late before I realized why. The whole highway was covered in nothing but black ice. My motorcycle began to slip out from underneath me, my wheels slid to the right while the top of the motorcycle swayed to the left. At that very moment, I entered a supernatural spiritual realm where everything begins to happen in slow motion. This realm is hard to explain to people. I am not exaggerating when I say time literally seems to come to a stop.

I have had this experience several times when God divinely intervened on my behalf.

I can think of at least 10 times this has happened to me. #1 when a gang leader was trying to kill me by stabbing me to death while coming out of Chicago in his car. #2 While saving a young man’s life from a motorcycle accident. #3 A large mule deer was going to slam into me on my motorcycle while I was headed through Canada. #4 My wife and I rolling down a cliff in our car. My newborn son Michael was up in the air, as my wife reaches out and snatches him to her chest. #5 My seventh-month pregnant wife, my son Michael and I on a 450 custom Honda. Headed for guardrails, telephone pole, and a pile of rocks. #6 Supernaturally empowered while driving a motorcycle and communist infested lands. #7 While flying my airplane through a set of high lines. #8 Right before I slammed my Cadillac into a concrete bridge. #9 Preventing a young lady from burning to death when her hair caught on fire. #10 When I was engulfed in a gasoline fire.

Now as my motorcycle (in slow motion it seemed to me) slid on its left side, I began to move in rhythm with the falling bike. First I pulled my left foot up out of the way before it was smashed between the road and the bike. As it was falling over, I stepped up over the top of it. At this point, the bike was completely on its side against the asphalt still doing about fifty miles an hour or so. Thank God I had heavy duty crash bars on the front for the driver and on the back of the bike for the passenger. They were designed to protect the rider and passenger but not to be used as skates on ice. Once the motorcycle was completely on its side it kept on sliding down the road like it was on skates. I sat on it like it was a divine carpet ride. As I was perched on top of the motorcycle I kept passing up cars. I slid down the highway never veering to the left or to the right. It was like someone throwing a bowling ball down the middle of the lane for a strike. People were gaping at me as I passed them up. I’m sure they had never seen nothing like this in their whole life. The black ice cause there to be very little friction between my crash bars in the highway. There were no sparks are screeching of rubbing steel against the asphalt.

Eventually, the motorcycle came to a complete stop, lying on its side in the middle of the highway still running. When the motorcycle had come to a completely stop, I jumped from it, grabbing its handlebars and shoving it to its upright position. I remounted my bike, put it in gear (it was still running) and went on my way. During this whole experience, neither my breathing nor my heart rate increased even for one second. You see, I was no longer backslidden. I was in the perfect will of God. I had peace like a river. The kingdom of God is not in meat or drink, but in Righteousness, Peace, and the joy of the Holy Ghost!

Yes, I did quit my job because my soul was of much greater value to me than the pleasures of this world. I gave them a two-week notice, packed my bags, loaded my little bit of belongings into the saddlebags of my motorcycle, and headed out West. As I drove away from everyone I knew and loved, God once again took a hold of my heart. I was on my way and thank God, I have never looked back!
