My Morning Routine - 3 Things I've Learned

My Morning Routine - 3 Things I've Learned

While not always as consistent as I would like to be, here are three things that have helped me bring my best self into the workday:

Exercise

Exercise and working out is a huge part of my life. Partly this is because I worked for almost 7 years in the fitness industry, but in general, I have always loved lifting weights since I was old enough to own them.

That said, as a self described "Night Owl" I never thought I'd be one of those people that wanted to get up and dive into a morning workout at 5am or 6am before the sun is up. However, a few years ago, after feeling motivated by a Grant Cardone morning routine video, I gave it a try and was quickly converted.

It didn't take many experiences for me to appreciate the empowering feeling of crushing an invigorating workout and the rest of your pre-work routine by 7am or 8am. Further, this lead into another interesting goal I learned from MAXOUT podcaster Ed Mylett:

Strive to be done with your day's most important activities by 12:00 PM.

This might sound crazy at first, yet I found it to be reasonably realistic when riding the momentum and energy of a workout completed before most people are awake.

Meditation

Meditation is so powerful and has changed my life for the better since I was introduced to it during my days working at Equinox.

The truth is, if you're not meditating, you're not operating at our highest potential because you don't have the amount of focus you could otherwise have, along with a host of other mental benefits.

Especially for salespeople, I highly recommend even 3-5 minutes of mindfulness practice. This is because it will absolutely help you be a better active listener, the number soft skill of top salespeople. This includes dialing in to what someone is really saying, having more presence in the moment, more self control, and less urge to respond preemptively.

Why not embrace these game changing abilities, especially when the meditations can be done for free via the Headspace app?

Journaling

There's something magical about recording our thoughts, capturing them, or writing it down.

While I don't do full-out journaling in the morning, I consistently work through a 5 minute routine via Tim Ferris. Basically, it consists of the following:

  • What I'm reading
  • What I'm listening to
  • Workout focus
  • 3-5 top goals
  • 3 things that would make today great (having a great workout seems to linger...)
  • 3 things I'm grateful for
  • 3 daily affirmations

So, you may ask, how can a sales professional specifically apply this to be more effective in their day and make more money?

Here's one example:

If I'm meeting with a prospect that day, I will write down their name as one of the things and people that I'm grateful for.

Then, when I'm going into that meeting, it's already been programmed that I'm grateful for the opportunity to meet with them.

Trust me when I say it makes a difference.
