My monthly update for ad publishers
Last month I shared my monthly group email here, and it went down pretty well, so I'm "making that a thing". Being LinkedIn, I thought I should also add an eye catching image, so just had to share this great shot of offline media fighting back.
I hope that you enjoy the update.
Hi, Mat from OKO here. I’m sat here typing in my shorts, so I think that we can call this month’s round up of ad-publisher news our “summer edition”. I’ll try to type fast… summers here in England can be brief!
To keep things digestible I've broken this email into 3 sections:
-
Key stories in brief - Essential reading for ad publishers
-
OKO news - Big news from here at OKO
-
Facebook changes - This month I focus on changes at this key traffic source
Before I go on though, one quick question: Are you happy with the once a month format, or do you think that a shorter email every fortnight would be better? I’m aware that some of these are getting long - I’d love to hear your take on it.
Key stories in brief
Three quick stories that I think every ad publisher should be aware of this month:
AMP for Ads : Google’s Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) allow lightning-fast loading of mobile pages, and the technology is now being used by Google to deliver ads at similar speed on AMP pages. More here from MarketingLand
Two US Senators demand action over Ad Fraud : “... by 2025, the digital ad market could be second only to drug trafficking as largest revenue source for organized crime”. Read more here
Native ads in DFP : Native ads, ads that appear more like content within your site, are coming to DFP. It’s a very limited roll-out so far, but a wider release would be welcomed by many. More on this story here
Change in DFP leads to unfilled passbacks : If you use DFP with waterfall set-ups please check your fill rates (If you work with us these have already been checked). A change to the way safeframes are handled means that many publishers are seeing passback ads failing to fill.
Partial victory in anti-adblocking case : After numerous legal defeats, German Publisher Axel Springer finally have something to celebrate in their battle against AdBlock Plus. German courts have ruled that AdBlock Plus cannot charge them to be white-listed. Eyeo, makers of Adblock Plus plan to appeal. More here.
OKO company news
Huge developments here at OKO over the last month
OKO become Google Certified Publishing Partners : In recognition of the work we do and results we achieve, Google have awarded us Google Certified Publishing Partner status. This is another UK first for OKO and we join a small, select handful of companies recognised by Google for their expertise with AdSense, DFP and Ad Exchange. More on this on our blog
Another new face on our team : This week our team grew again with Andreea joining our numbers. Andreea is deep in training and preparing for Google certification at the moment, but will soon be helping us to increase the earnings of more ad publishers.
Facebook Changes
Facebook have been spinning the dials again and the changes seem pretty significant this time around. The biggest change is now that content from Friends is shown above page/company content, which isn’t good news for many publishers. Here are some articles that the OKO team found interesting or useful:
Facebook puts friends above publishers : The feed has been overhauled - here is the official announcement.
In video links scrapped : Facebook have withdrawn the ability for video creators to embed links into clips, cutting off a popular traffic source. More
TechCrunch on “News feed values” : A good overview of the recent changes and what they mean here.
How to turn this to advantage : The strategy that we are seeing working is to focus on having users share content. Your content shared by a friend gains the new priority, so that is where the opportunity seems to be. This article on The Drum discusses the same approach.
That's it
I hope that you found the update interesting or useful. If you have any questions let me know.
