My Monday weekly email from 1/2/21

Monday 1st February 2021

Dear All,

And just like that, we’re into month 2 and 2021 is no longer a novelty that brings with it resolutions, big hopes and dreams, wishes for our best year ever and endless possibilities. It’s no longer a perfect blank page in front of us.

Nope, 2021 is now what we’re used to.

It’s real. Any illusion that it was going to be so much better than any previous year has vanished, only to be replaced by the realisation that 2021 is in fact, a lot like 2020.

Truth is though, this was always going to be the case. It’s why most people fail with their new years’ resolutions. They start out with such promise, maybe even a few good weeks of consistently forming new habits, only to be struck by a challenge or two, or just real-life getting in the way and staining their fresh new start to the new year.

I know some people who have to have things just right, otherwise they cannot proceed. Some people start out using a new journal in the new year, only to make a mistake on page 6, and they let this insignificant little scribble (or tipp-ex cover up) ruin their perfect start to the year. They can’t see past it. They have 5 previous pages of blot-free journaling, yet this little splodge or scribble, this tiny imperfection, is the only thing they focus on.

They decide this new year was supposed to be perfect, so they rip out the page and re-write the contents without the error. Masking over the truth of their year so far.

The truth that sh!t happens sometimes and we occasionally aren’t perfect. The truth that recognises that it’s the getting over and building on top of our errors and mistakes, that can actually lead to us having our best year ever.

Whether their first mistake happens on page 6 or doesn’t show up until page 106, the result will be the same. They will be knocked off-course. Their hopes dashed.

That is until or unless they embrace the truth.

The truth is that stuff will happen that could throw you off-course. Stuff can interrupt your best intentions. On a cold dark February morning, you might not have a spring in your step and a head full of positivity and excitement. But that’s perfectly normal. It just confirms you’re human.

Just like making a few mistakes when you’re writing stuff down, is normal. Just like having a few areas for improvement from last month, is perfectly normal. Just like not quite meeting all your goals or deadlines in January, is normal. But none of it has to ruin your year. The next 11 months don’t get written-off because the first 1 might not have been the blemish-free, perfection that you hoped it would be back on 1st January.

Whatever January was for you, whether great or mediocre, the future is still bright! And the present is still full of potential.

Focus on the positives. Build on your successes. Set even bigger goals for February and make a new commitment to smash through them.

Remember our first 2 focus values for 2021… that we will…

Constantly improve

Treat others as we want to be treated.

Do both these things more in February. Keep a tally of your daily actions to live these values. What will you do today to bring these into your life?

You’re always on the first day of your new year, it’s irrelevant what the date is. So move forward with purpose, with excitement and with confidence that you’re doing just the right thing.

Have a great new week.

Thanks,

Matt
