My Major featuring Sarah P. Thomas

"Recently, I have been delving into the field of neuro-oncology," shares 2023 National Merit $2500 Scholarship winner Sarah P. Thomas. "This specialized domain focuses on the prevention and treatment of neurological cancers. It is a rapidly developing area that has the potential to save the lives of those with debilitating neurological diseases." An undergraduate student at 美国哈佛大学 , Sarah is studying neurobiology. As someone with a lifelong interest in anatomical sciences, Sarah hopes to gain in-depth knowledge of the human mind. Sarah wants to participate in impactful research during her time at Harvard and notes, "The human mind provides a fascinating frontier to explore the most complex biological system known to humanity."

An enduring interest for expanding her medical knowledge also led Sarah to what she claims as her most significant accomplishment—founding an American Red Cross chapter at her high school. Sarah says, "This chapter focuses on sharing the values of the American Red Cross with our school and local communities. I poured countless hours of work into beginning this chapter at my school, and I have been gratified to see it flourish." Sarah urges incoming high school students to "be curious and open to exploration." She adds, "There is no formula for how to succeed in high school. This is a time for you to discover where your passions lie and begin to pursue those interests. As you begin your journey, keep an open mind and connect with people who share your goals."
