My Major featuring Ryan M. Burke

Ryan M. Burke, winner of a 2023 National Merit University of Idaho Scholarship, is a mathematics major. He says, "Mathematics has always interested me because it searches to expose the fascinating relationships that can be derived from assuming a set of simple axioms. This process of discovering the bounds of human logic illuminates both the strength of the human mind, as well as its weaknesses, and I plan to thoroughly study it in the hopes of one day being able to share my love for the subject with others as a professor."

Ryan shares that he recently read Euclid's Elements and was stricken by how many of the most fundamental mathematical concepts were presented differently in the text. "Most shocking was the omission of the modern mathematical syntax," he observes, noting that Euclid used words rather than numerals to express his ideas. "This has taught me that the way we approach math has a great effect on our potential to utilize it, and that to innovate often requires a radical change of perspective."
