My Low Carb Stance
I am thinking back four short years to when the fat free label denoted a healthy food choice, and fatty foods were to be avoided at all cost. They were the cause of heart attacks and obesity, after all. I am listening to a radio interview I did with #stephengrootes on Cape Talk in 2014 regarding the claims that Tim Noakes was making.
In the interview I supported the notion that it is not the dietary fats as much as the high intake of carbohydrates such as breads which are the cause of Diabetes, Heart Disease and Stroke. One year later, in 2015, the American dietary guidelines were altered, and did not list either fat or cholesterol as a "nutrient of concern". In fact, limitations on dietary fat intake were lifted. Today, we accept this as common sense, and limit the sugars in our diets. Many governments have sugar taxes, and in England, sugar drinks are being banned from schools etc. I am very proud of the public stand I made. Not many know that behind the scenes I was being attacked by many in my profession including an attempt to have me struck off the dieticians "role", and fined for my activities.I was harassed by lawyers, and one physician called me to tell me I had committed professional suicide. I have always been an independent thinker, so going against the mainstream was not that daunting to me. But unlike some associates, I do not enjoy causing rifts for their own sake, and I approached several academic institutions with an invitation to revise the way that physiology on these matters is taught. In response I was met with rebuke, personal abuse and character assassination. Those people know who they are. Am I a bad person for enjoying a little "I told you so" moment?. Yep. I'm pretty bad. ;)
