My LinkedIn Was Hacked: Here’s What Happened and What You Should Know

When I woke up one morning to check my LinkedIn, I was met with an unsettling discovery I had been locked out of my account. It didn’t take long to realize that my LinkedIn profile, my professional digital identity, had been hacked. This wasn’t just an inconvenience; it felt like a personal and professional violation.

The Shock of Seeing Years of Work Disappear

The hacker’s actions were methodical and cruel. Viral posts I had worked hard to create, showcasing insights and thought leadership, were deleted. Years of curated articles from my newsletter, #Tag-Talks each a labor of love and dedication vanished in an instant. Certifications and career milestones I had earned over a lifetime? Gone.

I was devastated. How could years of effort, collaboration, and growth be erased so quickly? But the reality is, cyberattacks like this are not as uncommon as we’d like to think. This is why I’m sharing my story not just to recount what happened, but to help you avoid a similar fate.

Fishing for Trust: The "Innocent" Trap

The attack started with what seemed like an innocuous email. It mimicked LinkedIn’s branding, down to the smallest detail. “Someone is trying to connect with you,” it said, urging me to click on a link. It seemed harmless. But that one click was all it took to give a hacker access to my account.

This type of attack, known as phishing, preys on our habits and trust. According to a recent study by Cybersecurity Ventures, 91% of successful cyberattacks begin with a phishing email. These hackers exploit our human tendency to trust, and the consequences can be devastating.

The LinkedIn Team to the Rescue

Amid the chaos, there was a silver lining. LinkedIn’s User Accounts team proved to be nothing short of extraordinary. Their swift responses, empathetic communication, and diligent efforts gave me hope when it felt like everything was lost. While some aspects of my account are still being restored, I am deeply grateful for their unwavering support.

Lessons Learned: How to Protect Yourself

If this experience has taught me anything, it’s that prevention is far better than recovery. Here are three actionable steps to safeguard your LinkedIn account and professional identity:

  1. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Adding this extra layer of security ensures that even if someone obtains your password, they’ll still need your phone or email to gain access.
  2. Be Skeptical of Emails: Always scrutinize unexpected emails, even those that appear to be from trusted sources. Look for inconsistencies in URLs and sender addresses before clicking any links.
  3. Regularly Back Up Your Content: While LinkedIn doesn’t offer a direct backup feature, you can save posts, articles, and other key content manually or with third-party tools. This ensures that your work isn’t entirely at the mercy of a single platform.

An Appeal to My Community

To my incredible network, I ask for your patience as I rebuild what was lost. The articles, insights, and resources you valued from #Tag-Talks will return stronger and more determined than ever. This setback is temporary, but the lessons it offers are invaluable.

I’ll continue sharing insights on leadership, marketing, and technology, but for now, I urge you to take the lessons from my experience to heart. Protect your accounts, scrutinize those "innocent" links, and never underestimate the importance of cybersecurity.

Rising from the Ashes: Rebuilding with Determination

While the immediate aftermath of the hack was discouraging, it has become a turning point a chance to rebuild with greater resilience. Every challenge comes with a lesson, and this experience has underscored the importance of adaptability and community support. My newsletter, #Tag-Talks, will not only make a comeback but will do so with fresh perspectives and renewed vigor.

For anyone who has experienced setbacks, professional or personal, know this: what defines us is not the challenges we face but how we rise above them. The stories we tell and the connections we foster matter more than any temporary loss.

A Special Thank You

I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to two amazing individuals who were instrumental during this ordeal. To my daughter, Eliza Oliveira, my little "hacker-in-training," thank you for your unwavering support and for reminding me to find humor even in tough situations. And to my great friend Rodrigo Ferreira Dos Santos from @Dynamics - IT, your invaluable tips and guidance on recovering my account were a lifeline. I couldn’t have done it without you.

Stay Vigilant, Stay Connected

Cybersecurity is not just a technical issue; it’s a shared responsibility. Whether you’re a CEO, an executive, or a professional striving for excellence, protecting your digital identity is critical. Share this article with your colleagues, friends, or anyone who might benefit from these lessons. Let’s build a safer, more informed professional network together.

Thank you for your patience, your trust, and your unwavering support. Let’s turn this setback into a stepping stone for greater success.
