My Like and Dislike of Windows

My like and dislike of Windows. I find Windows to be both the system I like the best and the system I like the least. In liking it the best, it is the OS on most machines.

On liking it the least, someone in Microsoft determines the features everyone "should" want then forces them out. I find that to be misguided. One such feature is forcing the latest bios on machines. My laptop is older yet quite adequate for any upgrade to Windows 10. Since it is older the only option that has proven to work is a clean reload of Windows 10 latest version. I know the other options for updating and have tried them all with Microsoft support. Here is my suggestion -- If the update is going to not pass the bios age check, Tell the user the Bios date, while possibly up-to-date, is old. Ask the user if it has the latest bios version. With a relevant warning, ask the user if they want to proceed with the update.

In addition I would not initially change any user-seen features. I would put a link on the desktop to a program on the computer called "feature update". There would be checks that could be checked if you want that feature updated. This is different than the Windows features part of Control Panel. That is a feature on or off option. What I am proposing is an option to update an individual feature or to roll only that feature back.

I realize that there are interdependencies to some system updates; however, I feel the Microsoft Update system should server the users not the users serving the system. I believe in maximum empowerment of the end user. I believe that my idea above is but one small step in that direction. For any IT system it should be designed with the paradigm of maximum user ease of use, ease of choice and ease of implementation.

Please pass this on. Hopefully it will get to people in Microsoft who can make a difference.
