My Life's GPS:

Reflecting on recent years, I'm reminded of the relatively recent GPS device that's helped me navigate unfamiliar locations. I often think of that helpful gadget. Now that I've stepped down as CEO of Bluebird Care Wirral, giving me more time for personal reflection.
What I have found is that we all have our own philosophies – our beliefs and values that guide our daily decisions. I have a philosophy about what time I go to bed, what time I get up. A philosophy about what I eat, a philosophy about exercise, a philosophy about education. My philosophies are the voice in my head, much like my GPS, telling me to "turn left" towards healthy eating or "proceed straight ahead" with our career goals.
When I was interviewing for staff, more than anything wanted to know about the candidate’s philosophies. The books they read, the television programs they watched, or the company they kept. Their philosophies about education, diet, exercise. Their choices, though seemingly small, were in fact the waypoints shaping their life's journey.
Over the years what I found was that people with a philosophy of continuous self-improvement tend to be happier and more inclined to reach their destinations more successfully. They're the ones always recalculating their route, looking for faster, more efficient ways to grow and learn.
On the other hand, those who had no ambitions more often than not found themselves off course and going down the wrong road.
I too often found myself going down the wrong road, but I was lucky, I had a sat nav that would say in a calm voice, "Turn around where possible." With me this meant reassessing my habits, my attitude, and my activities. I gave up having a ‘to do list!’ and made a ‘must get done list!’
For instance, if the bank balance was low – to find out why, I would look back to my customers, suppliers, my other business relationships, my habits, my attitude, my activities and found my trusty GPS telling me to turn around when possible.
Are you on the right path? Is your philosophy steering you towards your desired destination? If not, maybe it’s time for you to "recalculate route." Change your reading habits, adjust your attitude, or modify your daily activities. Your life's journey is in your hands.
Over time, I've learned that my most fulfilling achievements were those where I stayed true to my core values while remaining open to new routes and experiences. I found that it's about finding that balance between staying on course and exploring new paths.
So that’s me on my soap box telling you all about me! What is your GPS telling you to do. After all, the joy is in the journey, and with better philosophies, attitude and activities as your guide, you're going to be better equipped to reach your desired destination.
