My Lessons from a Regatta in the Aegean Sea

My Lessons from a Regatta in the Aegean Sea

Hello, my LinkedIn friends!

It's been a long time since my last newsletter!

I'm resuming publications here.

We recently returned from a yacht regatta.

A very unusual regatta.

??I want to share my experience and tell you about the insights that came to me there.?

What is so unusual about the regatta?

The crews were families.

Parents with children.

No romantic couples or stag parties! Just parents and kids.

An entire week on the same boat 24/7.

30 parents and 50 kids.?

My son is doing his job on the yacht??

Of course, even though it was called a regatta, the boats weren't competing in speed; it didn't matter.

The crews, moving from island to island in the Aegean Sea, performed tasks, passed quests, and participated in competitions.

In one of them, by the way, our crew won first place.?

The yachts were renamed pirate schooners to make it more interesting for the children.

Ours was called Queen Ann's Revenge.

Such a ship existed in reality and was ruled by the formidable Captain Blackbeard.

I was Blackbeard Blackbeard.?

In the evenings, joint dinners and workshops were organized at the anchorages.

I led one of them, called "Decision Making Technology.

I tried to make it interesting for both adults and children.

The experience of working in a school came in handy.?

So we had three children (from 4) on board with my wife, Anna.

The youngest.

The oldest, 21 years old, could not join us because of his university studies.

The children learned how to tie sea knots, helped the skipper moor and rise to anchor, and cleaned and washed our catamaran daily.

At one long anchorage, the children, ages 12, 9 and 8, bravely went scuba diving and scuba dived to 12 meters.?

What conclusions did I come to during the regatta?:

1. Most fears are not innate; we learn to fear depth, height, darkness, and ambitious goals on our own.

2. The smartphone, of course, is a very strong magnet, but when children are truly passionate, they forget about smartphones

3. Children are much more independent than we think; most of the time, they pretend to be helpless

4. Being with a child in the same small space all the time is not an easy challenge, but it can be learned
