First and foremost, I am so proud of my daughter Georgia and my son Jordan. Over the past year, they have both made massive decisions to become their own boss in their respective fields, and while marketing and contracting are wildly different worlds, I know from my own experience as an entrepreneur in a variety of sectors that their journeys will be marked by a wide array of challenges and opportunities.

Georgia, it is so impressive how your technology-driven marketing concept is already gathering speed (and clients!) all over the world. Offering incredible marketing support to businesses within the lifestyle, travel, hospitality, and aviation industries without the overhead is something that companies large and small will need going forward, especially in the wake of the pandemic. I am excited to watch you grow this unique business!

Jordan, your boutique, customer-focused Project Management business is already profitable after just one year, which is remarkable! Watching you expand the profile of your end-to-end fit-out business among home owners, office buildings and hospitality outlets has been truly gratifying.

The future is bright for both of you, and as you start to make more and more of your own decisions – and yes, sometimes you’ll make mistakes! – no matter what you do, know that I wish you both all of the luck in the world and that I’m proud of you. As someone who has gone down this road before you – and more importantly, as your Dad – I want to share a few of the lessons I’ve learned along the way, which will hopefully help you and others in the same position as you.

No Shortcuts

I can’t tell you the number of people who have started out as entrepreneurs but who can’t handle the fact that starting and running their own businesses has to become their whole life! On one hand its definitely easier and more flexible to work for yourself, but (especially right at the beginning) the only person who can push the company to the next level, the only person who can fix the mistakes, the only person who is driven to make your company a success is YOU. Just remember two things that I always say: “the harder you work the luckier you get” and “there are no shortcuts – just hard work and commitment.”

Ignore the Doubters

Sometimes your critics will be the loudest voices in your head, especially when you fail. There will always be someone ready to laugh and point when something goes wrong. Ironically, it is often these people who will hustle to be your friend the moment they get the slightest whiff of your success. As much as you can, don’t let their negativity be your driver – ignore them, forget about them and focus on what you want to achieve. After all, there’s no better revenge than success and at the end of the day, if you give this your all then at the very least you can say that you gave your dreams the very best shot you could!

Be YOU

Both of you are such hard workers, and even when you were each starting as apprentices and completing your qualifications, I could see that fire in you. No matter where the road to entrepreneurship takes you, it is my hope that you’ll stay humble, live life and just be yourselves. Even now you’re both starting to understand the pressures that come with leading your own business, including the very real need to look after your staff and the contractors who depend on your success, and I love seeing how its part of your nature to do what’s right (even when it isn’t always easy). After all, I love being in business but actually, my best role is being a father.
