The other night, my 13-year-old asked me to approve a new game on her phone. Nothing major—just a free app her friends were using. But before clicking “I Accept,” I did something radical: I actually read the Terms of Service.
What I found stopped me cold.
?? The app could track her location—even when she wasn’t using it.
?? Her messages could be monitored “to improve the user experience.”
?? Any artwork or videos she created in the app? The company owned it.
?? Her data could be shared with “affiliates”—which basically meant anyone willing to pay for it.
She was about to give away her privacy, creativity, and personal information, all for a game she’d likely forget about in two weeks.
And she had no idea.
The Invisible Risks of Clicking “I Accept”
Every day, we (and our kids) agree to things we don’t understand.
If you’re thinking, “Well, that’s just a random kids’ game—big companies wouldn’t do that,” let’s take a look at Netflix and Meta—platforms most of us use every day:

?? Auto-renewal traps—you’re charged unless you cancel in advance.
?? Arbitration clause—you waive your right to sue them, ever.
?? Regional content restrictions—they control what you can watch based on your location.

?? They own a broad license to your content—even after you delete it.
?? Your data is tracked, shared, and monetized—even across third-party sites.

These platforms aren’t just services—they’re data-collection machines, shaping how AI is trained, how ads are sold, and who controls digital identity.

Instead of blindly clicking “Accept,” I copied the Terms of Service into an AI tool and asked this:
?? “Summarize this Terms of Service in plain language. Highlight any risks related to data collection, content ownership, hidden fees, auto-renewals, and dispute resolution. If I were a 10-year-old, what would I need to know before clicking ‘I Accept’?”

? Flags privacy risks before you sign away your rights.
? Shows exactly what you (or your child) are agreeing to—before it’s too late.
And guess what? My daughter ran her next app through AI herself. She wanted to know what she was signing up for.
?? The Stakes Are Even Higher in Healthcare & Research
If all of this applies to social media, streaming services, and games, imagine what it means when we start talking about healthcare, medical research, and informed consent.
?? Patients in clinical research sign informed consent forms just like we accept digital TOS. But how many actually read them—or fully understand the implications?
?? AI-powered health apps and wearables collect biometric, genetic, and behavioral data—but who owns it? And who else gets access?
?? Pharmaceutical companies, researchers, and AI-driven health platforms are increasingly using real-world data to improve drug development—but when patients sign up for an app, a registry, or a trial, do they know how their data might be used five years from now?
Much like a streaming platform’s Terms of Service, health data agreements often favor the institution collecting the data, not the person contributing it.
For those of us in life sciences, drug development, and clinical research, we need to ask:
? How do we make patient consent as clear as possible—not just legally, but ethically?
? Are we ensuring transparency about how patient data is used in future AI models?
? Can we use AI to simplify and improve the informed consent process, making it easier for patients to fully understand what they’re agreeing to?
Because in healthcare, this isn’t just about convenience—it’s about trust.

The Fine Print is No Longer a Trap
Tech companies count on us not reading the details. But now, AI makes it easy.
And here’s why you never had a choice in the first place:
Most Terms of Service agreements are Contracts of Adhesion—a fancy legal way of saying “take it or leave it.” These contracts are non-negotiable; if you want to use the service, you must accept all the terms, as written, with no room for discussion.
This means:
?? You cannot modify Netflix’s arbitration clause to retain your right to sue.
?? You cannot stop Meta from tracking your data unless they explicitly allow it.
?? You cannot negotiate better privacy terms—you can only accept or walk away.
And if you think this is all theoretical, remember the Black Mirror episode Joan is Awful—where a woman unknowingly signs away her entire life to a streaming platform simply by agreeing to its Terms of Service. It seemed absurd… until we realized that real-life TOS agreements aren’t much better.
We don’t need a dystopian future to make us rethink digital contracts. We just need to stop agreeing to what we don’t understand. AI can help us take back control.

I wonder how long until companies train AI to find the risks acceptable ie not see them anymore, in the same way we’ve all become complacent because T&Cs seem nothing we can do anything about (or read because they are too long)?
