My Key takeaway From The Presidential Debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump
I read through some articles and saw some endorsement pieces of the US presidential debate which bore significant ramifications for most of the world.
Much of the media turned the debate into a 'Who Won' piece but as a Nigerian, with our current economic climate. I was more interested in a different metric:
'Where does each presidential candidate lean toward?
Recently, I stood among the demolished shops at New Artisan Market, Enugu, Nigeria, a once booming market, which was suspected of being over-run with touts, thugs, and criminals.
A week or two back, I was drawn into an argument with a friend about a demolition at the Emene area in Enugu.
An abandoned poultry farm was demolished and reclaimed under a new local law that gives the government power to repossess and clear lands or landed properties used as hideouts for kidnappers and thieves.
Acting on intelligence, the military raided the Emene area and, engaged the suspected kidnappers, and a gun battle ensured.
Captives were rescued and the land was cleared and repossessed by the government.
People-focused policy: I would consider mostly the poultry land owner.
He/she most likely invested a substantial sum and the only reason, it was abandoned- was because it wasn’t profitable and maybe he/she still planned to return under favorable macroeconomic conditions.
Government-focused policy: I would consider the majority views of people of Enugu.
If I were one of the captive family members or a captive I would wish no such hideouts existed or were taken over by the government.
And the latter part of that thought was my first conclusion as I read the government’s narrative for the demolition?of?New?Artisan?Market.

Still, when I heard of a friend's dad's company that was in the area and was also demolished.
I felt bad?and?frustrated.
It hadn’t been up to two years, that his father had labored and invested millions in building market stalls and setting up a water purification factory in the New Artisan Market area.
Now it was all rubble for as far as the eye could see and, I could see the strain on his face.
His immature seeds were ripped from the earth and still, he was to bear the financial burden of the relocation for the upturned machinery and equipment.
Now, as is usual in the lawless hustle and bubble of?most?demolitions?in?market?areas, touts preyed on weakened business owners, scavenging what the owners had scrambled to save and with most owners unable to give pursuit?for?fear?of?losing?more?and risk?to?life.
And through this nightmarish situation, my friend's father was also at risk of losing the land to government repossession.
Unlike the Emene incident, his property was fenced and was put to good economic use but the surroundings and externalities had brought the government to his door.
People-focused policy: Should the government give compensation?
Government-focused policy: Or should Enugu rejoice that an area suspected to be overrun by touts had been cleared?
The one truth is it's always an argument till it happens to you.
So, which policy direction does each presidential candidate lean toward?
