MY KANYE / TAYLOR SWIFT MOMENT

MY KANYE / TAYLOR SWIFT MOMENT

While I was delivering a recent keynote for the Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre (AMGC), an audience member leaped onto the stage, took the microphone, and launched into an unexpected monologue.

The interruption was as startling as it was unscripted, but it served to highlight an often-overlooked aspect of cybersecurity in the manufacturing sector.

We're well-versed in protecting our IT systems - our emails, websites, PCs, and phones are regularly patched and protected. However, in the heart of manufacturing, where the physical meets the digital, lies our Operational Technology (OT). These systems, essential for our day-to-day operations, have traditionally operated in isolation, but no longer. The convergence of IT and OT systems is happening at an unprecedented pace, bringing with it a unique set of challenges. Unlike IT, OT systems are often used far beyond their intended lifespans and frequently miss out on critical security updates and vendor support, making them vulnerable to threats.

This unexpected stage moment highlighted a crucial point: the cybersecurity landscape in manufacturing is evolving, and our approach must evolve with it. As IT and OT converge, we must ensure both are equally defended, recognising the unique vulnerabilities and threats each face.

To my impromptu co-speaker: While your method was unconventional, your message was timely. Cybersecurity in manufacturing isn't just about guarding the front door (our IT systems) but also securing the back gate (our OT systems). Thanks for the 'interruption' - it's a reminder that sometimes, the most unexpected events can highlight the most critical insights.

I recently published a brief whitepaper about how manufacturing business can protect their businesses effectively without a significant investment of time or money.?If you're interested?grab a copy of it here .

Great delivery of an indeed important message! Cyber Security risk should not be taken lightly especially when those systems are the back bone of your business. I didn't know Kanye attended Advanced Manufacturing events.. interesting!
