My Journey Towards Better Health and Enhanced Professional Focus
I've never been one to share my struggles publicly, especially on a professional network like LinkedIn. However, recent events have intertwined my personal experiences with my professional life, making this post both necessary and, I hope, helpful to others.
It all started a few weeks ago, during a seemingly ordinary lunch with a friend. I realized that the few drinks I had were impacting my ability to function effectively at work. This was not just an isolated incident but a wake-up call that made me confront an uncomfortable truth. It was a realization brought to sharper focus not just by my own experiences, but also by the concerns expressed by those closest to me—my wife, friends, and even business associates.
In a bid to understand my situation better, I turned to aa.org to take a self-administered questionnaire designed to assess one's drinking habits. I answered with brutal honesty and the results were eye-opening—indicating that I was teetering on the edge of having a serious problem. It was a pivotal moment for me.
With this newfound awareness, I made a firm decision: not just to cut back on my alcohol consumption, but to eliminate it during workdays and any professional settings. The rules I set for myself were clear—no alcohol unless I was at home and there was a safe, sober means of transportation available, like a designated driver, a ride-share service, or public transportation.

The impact of this decision was immediate and profound. Within days, I noticed a clearer mind and a sharper focus. My days became more productive, and my interactions with colleagues and clients were more engaging and effective. The fog I hadn't even realized I was under began to lift, revealing a zest for my work and a stronger drive to perform.
However, the benefits extended beyond my professional life. I found myself with more energy to invest in self-care and wellness. I started walking every morning for 45 - 60 minutes, eating healthier, and honestly, just smiling more. The support from my family and friends has been overwhelming, giving me strength and reaffirming my commitment to this new chapter.
This journey has taught me a lot about resilience and the power of making hard decisions. It’s about more than just cutting out alcohol; it’s about understanding the underlying patterns that lead us to make choices that don’t serve us well and re-learning how to make better ones. This process of introspection and change is ongoing, and every day offers a new opportunity to strengthen my commitment.
I'm sharing this story because it’s important to acknowledge that personal struggles do not exist in a vacuum—they spill over into our professional lives, affecting our performance, relationships, and self-perception. I hope that by sharing my experience, I can encourage others who might be facing similar challenges to take that first step towards self-improvement. We often celebrate professional achievements on platforms like LinkedIn, but it’s equally important to celebrate personal growth and resilience.

6 个月Very good read, Stu. Glad to hear about cutting back on alcohol. As someone who has had brief bartending gigs and enjoys an occasional drink, I've seen how easy it is to fall into bad habits. A good diet and moderate exercise does wonders for the body!
