My Journey through JavaScript: Mastering the Building Blocks of Modern Web Development

JavaScript is essential for modern web development, providing interactivity and dynamic content. I have a solid understanding of its core concepts and best practices. Here’s a summary of what I’ve learned.


1. V8 Engine and Server-Side JavaScript

  • V8 Engine: This is the powerful JavaScript engine used by Google Chrome to run code efficiently by compiling it into machine language.
  • Node.js: Allows JavaScript to run on the server, turning it into a full-stack language, which is essential for server-side development.


2. Why JavaScript?

JavaScript is essential for modern web development due to its ability to:

  • Change HTML content dynamically.
  • Modify HTML attributes and styles.
  • Toggle the visibility of HTML elements.

It’s this versatility that makes JavaScript the backbone of interactive websites.


3. Variables in JavaScript: var, let, const

Understanding the scope and behavior of variables is critical:

  • Global Scope: Variables declared outside a function or block are globally accessible.
  • Block Scope: Variables declared with let and const are block-scoped, which means they can't be accessed outside the block they're defined in. (like loops, if statements, or any {}). They cannot be accessed outside of this block.
  • Function Scope: var is function-scoped, so it's accessible only within the function it’s declared in.(so they can escape from within loops or conditionals).

Other key points include:

  • let and const can't be redeclared within the same scope.
  • const variables can't be updated or redefined, making them ideal for constants.


4. JavaScript Functions: Reusability and Parameters

Functions allow you to create reusable code blocks.

For example:

function greet(name, country) {

}        

In this example, name and city are parameters, while the values passed during the function call (e.g., "Shashika", "SriLanka") are arguments.

  • Bubbling: Events move from the target element to its ancestors(The event first happens on the button and then bubbles up to the div.)
  • Capturing: Events propagate from the root to the target element(The event first goes to the div and then to the button.)


11. JSON and Data Handling

JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is essential for interacting with web APIs. It’s a lightweight data-interchange format that allows data to be transferred between server and client. Understanding JSON is crucial when working with APIs and handling backend communication.
