My Journey with Social Anxiety: Insights on Management and Support

I first became aware that I was dealing with social anxiety at an Alicia Keys concert. Despite enjoying the show, the sheer number of people around me triggered a strong urge to leave and find a space where I could be alone. Realizing that I was experiencing social anxiety was challenging, but sharing this topic in the newsletter feels necessary. There’s still a stigma around being honest about mental health, and I believe discussing it openly can help others who might be struggling in silence.

Sharing My Experience with Social Anxiety

There have been times when my social anxiety was particularly challenging. For instance, in professional settings, I often feel like I have to project confidence, even when I’m internally anxious. This discrepancy can sometimes make me appear cold or standoffish to others. It’s a constant effort to manage these feelings and maintain professional relationships.

To cope, I initially turned to less healthy habits, like alcohol. Over time, I shifted to more beneficial practices such as regular exercise, which has significantly helped alleviate my anxiety. Finding a positive outlet has been crucial in managing my mental health.

Practical Insights for Managing Social Anxiety

One effective strategy I’ve found for calming anxiety is a simple breathing exercise: taking deep breaths, holding for four seconds, and then slowly exhaling. This technique helps me center myself during anxious moments.

In terms of mindfulness, taking a break to step outside or sit quietly in my car has been incredibly beneficial. Pausing before responding and finding a quiet space allows me to reduce anxiety and approach situations more calmly.

I am also in the process of seeking professional help from a therapist. Acknowledging the need for professional assistance is a crucial step in managing anxiety effectively, and I hope it encourages others to seek the help they need.

How Support Networks Can Help Manage Social Anxiety

Support from friends and family has been invaluable. My fiancé understands the pressures I face and provides the space I need to relax and think things through. Her support has been crucial in managing my anxiety.

I’ve also found solace in support groups. About a year ago, I started a podcast with other veterans, and the after-show discussions about our struggles have been incredibly therapeutic. Maintaining these relationships and knowing I can reach out to friends when feeling overwhelmed has made a significant difference.

Building a supportive network involves being open about your struggles. Letting people know you need help can lead to unexpected support and understanding.

Closing Thoughts...

Sharing my journey with social anxiety has been rewarding because it helps break down the perception that I have everything figured out. It’s essential to recognize that emotions are temporary, and having a clear vision of who I want to be keeps me motivated.

If you’re struggling with social anxiety, I encourage you to share your experiences in the comments. How have you managed or are working towards overcoming it? Let’s create a supportive community together.

I suffered with social anxiety for a very long time. My Great Dane is registered as my emotional support dog. I have overcome my anxiety through controlling my thoughts and fears. I was on meds and they didn't work. I overcame through self care and self love. Slowly going to bigger and bigger events to test myself. My ex-husband abused me and made me believe I didn't belong around anyone. He made me believe I wasn't good enough. His voice was in my head for a very long time.

So often and especially in the veteran community, we want an immediate solution to every problem. When that doesn't happen we tend to self-destruct and turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms. What you're doing is commendable, keep up the amazing work!
