My long journey to a master’s degree

Today, I have submitted my working paperfor an award of MSc, Disaster Management at Coventry University.

Getting a master’s degree is a dream I have held since I graduating with a BA in Economics from the University of Nairobi in October 1990. I joined Coventry in May 2019 having been admitted but failed to enrol or progress on six previous occasions.

My 1st admission was for a masters was in October 1991. This was at Leeds University UK. I could not enrol for lack study leave.

The 2nd admission was June 2003 . Though offered partial scholarship & teaching assistantship by a University in the US, I did not enrol for family & professional reasons.

The 3rd admission was at Monash University Australia. However, I had wanteddistance learning fprogramme and hence could not enrol for the fulltime mode offered.

My 4th admission was at the Birkbeck College University of London in 2006. However, I had to travel on mission for two weeks at the start, for my then employer Commonwealth Secretariat.

On the 5th admission, I nearly made it. This was back to Birkbeck for an MA Development Studies in 2009. Work travel schedule could not allow me continue.

The 6th admission was In June 2014 at Clarks University USA. I was offered tuition scholarship but could not take up for family reasons.

Today, Monday 10th August 2020, I have submitted my working paper thus marking an end to my studies.

Whatever happens, I have now achieved my lives dream … I will soon graduate with a Master’s Degree.
