My Journey and Insights in Cybersecurity with Hackerverse!

Hello everyone, I'm Zach Kromkowski, and I recently had the opportunity to share my journey and insights on HACKERverse? with Mariana Padilla of KIKrr? ! It was a fantastic experience, and this made me realize I've never really shared how I got to the point that I've gotten to within cyber. So here is a summary to the interview with some of the key points we discussed, I encourage you to watch the full video here!

My Non-Traditional Path into Cybersecurity

My journey into cybersecurity wasn't a straight path. With a background in business management and a minor in computer information technology from Purdue University, I ventured into the cybersecurity world, which was quite different from my initial career trajectory. This experience taught me that the cybersecurity industry values diverse perspectives and skills, and there's room for those who may not fit the traditional mold.

The Importance of Hardening in Cybersecurity

One of the critical areas I focused on during our discussion was the concept of 'hardening' in cybersecurity. It's not the most glamorous part of the job, but it's incredibly crucial. Hardening involves configuring the security settings of devices and applications to ensure robust protection. This aspect is particularly vital for small businesses, which are often more susceptible to cyber threats due to less stringent security measures.

Bridging the Communication Gap

A significant challenge I've noticed in the industry is the communication gap between practitioners, like security engineers, and executives, like CISOs. This disconnect can lead to a lack of collaboration and understanding within organizations. It's essential to foster better communication and shared knowledge across different levels to enhance cybersecurity measures effectively.

Lessons from My Business Journey

Reflecting on my own business journey, I've learned the importance of adaptability and focusing on niche areas. Initially, Senteon Managed Endpoint Hardening tried to compete with big names by developing an EDR solution. However, we soon realized the value of specializing in an underserved area, like GPO hardening to Center for Internet Security standards, which turned out to be a more strategic and impactful focus.

The Role of Free Educational Content

I'm a firm believer in the power of free educational content. Sharing knowledge and resources has been a significant part of my company's strategy. This approach aligns with the evolving landscape of marketing in cybersecurity, where building communities and providing value is becoming increasingly important.

Looking Ahead: Usability and Reporting

As I look to the future, I see a trend towards more user-friendly cybersecurity solutions. The industry is moving towards simplifying tasks, making security software more accessible to a broader audience. Additionally, effective reporting is becoming crucial, especially as the industry leans more towards compliance and the need to demonstrate and verify security outcomes.

Building Online Communities

The human aspect of cybersecurity is something I hold dear. Sharing my personal interests, like my favorite TV shows, helps in building relatable connections within the community. Online platforms offer a unique opportunity for cybersecurity professionals to engage, learn, and grow together, despite the challenges of fostering engagement compared to in-person interactions.

Conclusion

My session on Hackerverse was an enriching experience, allowing me to share my insights and learnings in cybersecurity. The industry is dynamic and ever-evolving, and I believe that sharing our experiences and knowledge is key to navigating its complexities. Whether you're a seasoned professional or new to the field, I hope my journey and insights provide some guidance and inspiration in your cybersecurity endeavors.

Your insights make me so proud of you!!!
