My journey in hospitality
With over 25 years of hands-on experience in the pub trade, I've journeyed from potwasher to owning and managing award-winning pubs. My career began in Brighton, where I became a hotel night manager at just 21. I then worked with two of Brighton’s leading pub companies as a managing partner which was the launch pad to opening my first pub, The Geese. Under my leadership, The Geese earned multiple accolades, including three awards for the Best Roast and the title of Best Local in 2023.
As a multi generational publican (dating back to my great gran Emily Allen), I grew up around pubs, even as a kid I loved the smell of beer in my grandads pub and would collect the keg caps to use as mini frisbees.
I am deeply passionate about the people who make the pub industry thrive—General Managers, Assistant Managers, and all the hardworking individuals behind the scenes. My coaching focuses on supporting their mental health and mentoring them to reach their full potential. I believe that a positive work culture and a focus on health and wellness are essential for both personal and professional growth.
My authenticity sets me apart. I've worked every role in a pub, from the kitchen to the bar, crazy sundays serving roasts, managing late nights, crafting cocktails, and keeping real ales. This firsthand experience gives me a deep empathy for pub teams, allowing me to connect with and support them meaningfully.
The proudest elements of my career is the relationships I've built. Some of my friends are ex-regulars in pubs I've ran and some of my best friends are ex-employees who've gone on to achieve amazing things and we remain close to this day.
It's important to me to promote confidence, clarity, and focus, believing that a healthy body supports a healthy mind—balance is key to a thriving team. I’m a keen cyclist, and my fitness is important to me, reflecting my belief in maintaining both physical and mental well-being.
If you'd like to know more or just looking to expand my network please drop me a DM, I'd love to hear from you.
All the best,
Rob
