My Journey to Hitachi – Miguel Campos
No career path is the same, with many involving unexpected turns and surprising destinations – including for those who are embarking on them.??
This can certainly be said for Miguel Campos, who started his career in academia and recently joined Hitachi ZeroCarbon as Business Intelligence Developer.??
New to the Hitachi family, we asked him about his role, what he’s learnt from his career so far, and his hopes for the future in our latest series My Journey to Hitachi, which lifts the lid on the many varied and interesting career stories that can be found at our company.??
What’s something interesting we should know about you???
I’m a trained physicist and I come from Chile. I studied theoretical physics for 11 years and my first time coming to Europe was actually for an internship at CERN, working on the Large Hadron Collider experiment; a particle accelerator shaped as a 27km ring, 175m underground and on the border between France and Switzerland, which accelerates protons and ions to speed extremely close to the speed of light.??
Tell us more about your first role – would you say it’s related to your current job in any way??
My first role was in a research position at King’s College London, which was the reason I originally moved to the UK. I would say that it’s tangentially related to what I do now in the sense that I was working with data back then as well, and that taking data and respresenting it in a visually impactful way was an important part of the role. However, the type of data I was working with was radically different: it was related to that elusive dark matter, which makes up 85% of the universe’s total mass and is so important on a cosmological scale. Today the data I use in my role at Hitachi ZeroCarbon is related to electric vehicles, important for humans in the here and now.?
You recently joined Hitachi, what was it that drew you to the company??

What are your hopes for the future of Hitachi??

If you could solve one major global problem, what would it be and how would you do it??
Biodiversity loss has become a major crisis in recent years, with species currently going extinct at a rate that is tens to hundreds of times higher than the natural background rate. According to a WWF report from 2020, global animal populations have decreased by 68% since 1970. Global problems require global solutions, and these are hard to implement. At the city level, we need urban planning that supports biodiversity and community engagement through education. At the national level, stronger environmental laws and incentives for conservation are essential. Globally, we require protected areas and restorations projects, and of course, climate change mitigation.?
