My Journey in Healthcare: Lessons Learned from a Dreamer to a Thought Leader

Since childhood, I have had a dream—to become a doctor. It’s still a mystery to me how I set such a concrete goal in my young mind, but it was a dream that guided my every step. Growing up, I knew that achieving this dream would require focus, determination, and hard work. As I entered secondary school at Lycee Pilote—Gafsa, I realized the need for academic excellence to secure a place in the Faculty of Medicine.

Starting my medical studies in 1999-2000 was an exhilarating experience, filled with new friends, courses, and a new city. The reality of medical school was more challenging than I had imagined, but it fueled my excitement and passion for learning. Despite the ups and downs, and through the grace of Allah, I persevered.

Reflecting on 12 Years in Practice

Fast-forward to October 2024, and I now mark 12 years of experience as an Assistant Professor and Consultant of Internal Medicine, having worked in Tunisia and Saudi Arabia. During this time, I’ve had the privilege of serving patients, mentoring students, and collaborating with professionals from diverse backgrounds.

This journey has been far from smooth. I’ve experienced failures and celebrated successes. I’ve stumbled and picked myself up time and time again. Yet, each challenge has taught me something new. Here are the key lessons I’ve learned along the way:

12 Lessons from My Journey in Healthcare

  1. Stay Focused on Your Goals From childhood dreams to professional milestones, focus, and determination make the impossible attainable.
  2. Excel in the Basics Mastering fundamentals, whether in studies or practice, is the foundation for long-term success in any field.
  3. Embrace Change, but Hold Core Values Adapt to new circumstances, but never compromise on your fundamental beliefs and principles.
  4. Enjoy the Journey, Not Just the Destination Cherish every moment, as each experience adds value to your personal and professional growth.
  5. Continuous Learning is Non-negotiable The world evolves, and so should you—embrace lifelong learning to stay relevant.
  6. Learn, Unlearn, and Relearn Be willing to discard outdated knowledge and embrace new ideas to keep pace with advancements.
  7. Value Every Connection Build strong relationships; each person you meet can offer a unique perspective and insight.
  8. Resilience is Key When faced with setbacks, remember that persistence and the ability to rise again define your path.
  9. Seek Wisdom from All Sources Wisdom is not limited to textbooks—learn from colleagues, patients, and everyday interactions.
  10. Balance Passion with Practicality Love what you do, but maintain a balanced perspective to avoid burnout and ensure sustainability.
  11. Give Back to Your Community Use your skills and knowledge to uplift those around you—mentorship and service create a lasting impact.
  12. Trust in a Greater Plan While you work hard, recognize that there’s always a larger purpose at play, and find peace in that trust.

These insights reflect the lessons I’ve gathered over 12 years in Healthcare and beyond. They guide me every day, and hopefully, they can inspire you on your own journey.

Continuing the Journey with a Passion for Knowledge

Today, even with over a decade of experience, my thirst for knowledge remains unquenched. I am eager to learn new skills, embrace new challenges, and explore uncharted territories in healthcare and beyond. My journey is not just about being a physician; it’s about being a lifelong student and a mentor to the next generation of healthcare professionals.

I hope that sharing my story can inspire others on their own journeys—whether you're a student, a fellow practitioner, or someone with a dream like the one I had as a child. Let’s continue to push boundaries, embrace change, and make the most of every moment we are given.
