My journey as a Digital marketer. A real life story

How it started

When I look back at my career journey, I read pure and Industrial chemistry in University. After graduation, I had no job. Although I got married the same year I graduated. I was pregnant while serving as a Youth Corp and delivered my beautiful twins during my Youth service year. 

I was so anxious about getting a new job or starting my own company as a chemist. But no funds to start up a business. I started applying for jobs, but unfortunately didn’t get anyone. I could be invited to write an exam and most of the time at the final interview level, I won’t be selected. 

The Youwin program was published. I had to try my luck to see if I could be selected and be given funds to start a business. I was selected, but didn’t make it to the final stage. I was frustrated and felt very bad about the whole thing. I don’t want to be a full time housewife, I need a career, I want to contribute to society, I need to socialize. I just don’t want to stay at home all day doing nothing. 

Fast forward 2013, I finally got a Job in Union Bank of Nigeria as an Admin Manager, I was so excited, I never knew is when I would have to face life itself. Who will take care of my twins? I have to combine being a mother, taking care of house chores and working as a banker. Isn’t funny, life is no longer what it used to be. 

Apart from stress, I keep on getting threats of being fired, if I don’t meet up with a certain target. I started to think of a better opportunity. I was praying and asking God to direct me. Fortunately for me, I was just browsing through Facebook and I saw an advert about how to start an online business even if you are working or a stay at home mum. I pick interest. I have to visit the lady landing page to read through, what the offer is all about. Then I know nothing about Facebook ads or landing pages, websites and all that. But the offer is an interesting one, although I don’t know how it works, but I decided to give it a trial. Because it sounds so good. I paid for the course, but before I paid, I was having double mind, if it is a scam. But I decide to pay, even if it is a scam. Let me just sacrifice the money. Because as of 2013, most people don’t know anything about digital marketing, affiliate marketing, information marketing etc.

After payment she sent me a series of ebooks for the training and directed me on what to do. I have to start going through the course, but I was confused, in my confusion I still want to be an expert like Linda Ikeji blog. Because in the training manual she has a course for blogging, affiliate marketing, information marketing, Facebook marketing, SEO,  Paypal and Payoneer for receiving money in Nigeria. In Fact the manual is loaded. I was not familiar with all of that, but I have to read and practice. 

To cut the story short that was how my journey as a digital marketing started. The truth is that I really have passion for this career. I love it. So no matter how difficult it gets, I keep on trying, even when I’m not earning. I keep on practicing, researching for more information on how to get things better.

I earn my first money which is $100 through affiliate marketing. I was so excited. At least I have achieved something. That $100 is more than what I paid for the course and expenses so far. I was still working in the bank while practicing. From Union bank I got another Job in Access bank as a customer service personnel. I still didn’t stop, I keep on moving because I have passion for this career. I was regretting why I didn’t choose to read computer science, when I discovered how passionate I am about this profession. Because chemistry doesn’t mean anything for me again.

In 2019, I have to quit banking, to start digital marketing as a full time career. I registered with VAST Technology to learn programming, in HTML, CSS, Javascript and PHP. After that I learnt wordpress web design and core digital marketing, which include Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp (META) and SEO with Webbiit. 

Even till now, I have not stopped learning, researching and doing the best of what I know how to do. I also joined digital Ad Degree training and have fully certified as a digital marketer. 

Digital marketing has really favored me, it has given me the opportunity to earn thousands of dollars, meet people I wouldn’t have met in life. 

I have helped businesses that are at zero level to become better. I have also trained others.

 I might not be a guru, but God got my back.  Is a game changer for me. If I start to mention what I have gained with this profession I won’t stop today. I’m grateful to God. And I’m hoping for a better tomorrow. If you are looking for a career you can start you can venture into digital marketing, but make sure that you have passion for it, these will help you to be patient and nurture the career you have chosen.
