Not My Journey
David George Brooke "That Gratitude Guy"
Keynote Speaker & Gratitude Expert | "Gratitude Turns What You Have Into Enough"
We are all bombarded by people constantly telling us all about their fun and exciting life. From social media posts we cannot escape the evidence of the fantastic life that so many people are living.
Or so it seems.
Now I’m sure there are some examples that are true, but I suspect that there is a fair amount of exaggerating going on here.
They appear to have a better job, better spouse, better house, better vacation, and just about better anything than you have.
I recently saw where someone reposted the same pictures from their vacation to give the illusion that they had been on vacation 2-3 more times at the same place.
If you’re looking for a message that can help combat the potential feelings such as imposter syndrome, lack of self-esteem, lack of?self-confidence, or just the thought that your life seems to come up short.…..I have a mantra for you.
“Not my journey”
Your journey is YOUR journey. ?Embrace it.?Own it. Appreciate it.
Most importantly be GRATEFUL for your journey.
Don’t worry about other people’s journeys.?
They have enough issues of their own. They just don't always tell you.
When you embrace an “attitude of gratitude’ and you follow a gratitude practice, you will ultimately just feel compassion for those people that are trying so hard to impress others.
“Not my journey”
Practice saying that the next time you’re feeling like your life doesn’t quite measure up.
It works.

2 年Love the reminder, David George Brooke - That Gratitude Guy. "Not my journey." A powerful tool against comparison. Our mutual friend, Fran Gallaher once told me: Comparison is like a hammer. It has limited usefulness. Staying in our own lanes is one way to quiet the comparison that only serves up disappointment and steals joy. Great post!

2 年That's a powerful mantra. Love it. We rarely get the complete picture of someone else's journey either. We end up comparing our journey to what we make up their journey to have been. It's a trap I sometimes fall into, but I will remember your mantra the next time I do.

"I recently saw where someone reposted the same pictures from their vacation to give the illusion that they had been on vacation 2-3 more times at the same place." This stuff - all the "look at my awesome life, look at me as a mom of 5 and watch me do my workout in my basement... " it's just not. my. journey.

2 年Great phrase, David. I sometimes think of "not my circus, not my monkeys" when certain things are not looking good, but it's important to understand the other side of it, too, when things seem to be going impossibly well...
