My Journey as a Copywriter in Nigeria: The Do's and Don’ts of Getting Paying Jobs and Gigs.

My Journey as a Copywriter in Nigeria: The Do's and Don’ts of Getting Paying Jobs and Gigs.

It is absolutely important that you write?

A lot of you will read this sentence and breeze it off because it’s quite obvious that writing is what a writer does. Forgetting that being a copywriter is more than just knowing how to write or waiting for your next gig before you produce copy.?

If you’re reading this, then you’ve finally come to the realization that you need cash to survive in this life, especially in Nigeria.

Perhaps, you’re like me who has gone through seamless YouTube videos and Ponzi schemes before learning the truth: you need a practical skill to make cash the legit way, and I chose copywriting, you can chose it too.

?

Starting out as a copywriter in Nigeria is no easy feat. Just make sure you’re still under your parents roof or have another source of income because the job market will show you pepper.?

If you can’t handle the heat, please leave now, use the exit, and save yourself from disappointment. Less copywriters = more work for those remaining??.??

The real question is, why would a complete stranger want to point me in the right direction, and why should I listen to her? If you thought this, then you’ve completed the first step in getting paying jobs or gigs.

They say if it’s too good to be true, ask yourself what’s in it for the person offering you the deal.?I've walked this path, and now I want to share my experience to guide you through the maze of finding paid work in this field.

My goal is to build a following of loyal followers who are committed to learning and grabbing opportunities. I’m tired of seeing people pay outrageous prices for information they could get for free with a little more dedication??.?

?

All you have to do is stay tuned, follow, learn, and apply all the practical advice I have to offer. The first thing one must do is understand that the world is a cruel place, and there are people out there eager to use you to their benefit without paying you, get you to buy their material for outrageous prices, and waste your time. I learnt the hard way; you don’t have to. This is an introduction article for Copywriting 101.?

The Struggles and Scams Beware!

I’m still healing from a scam that happened a few days ago; thankfully, I didn't lose money. I’ll share that experience later. For the purpose of our first lesson, I’ll share another one that happened a year ago.??

I wrote an e-book on romance for "Scripts," ”EUPHORIA HE, to be specific; you can look her up on LinkedIn. I was asked to write a script and given a format on how to do it. After submitting my work, I waited and waited for a review; it never came. I then reached out to the chief editor, Yiping, who, surprising enough, had magically changed her name to the one stated above. It took weeks to get a response, and when I did, it was another excuse for why they hadn’t gotten back to me.

?

The signs will always be there, but because you’re desperate to get a job, you just might overlook them. I’m not proud to say I fell into the trap of a scam artist who had me work tirelessly only to disappear without paying me a dime. It was disheartening; I already spent money I had not seen; you know how that ends??.

Do’s in copywriting:

?

  1. Research Before Committing: Always research the company or individual offering you a gig. Check reviews, ask for contracts, and never be afraid to say no if something feels off.
  2. Join Legitimate Platforms: There are plenty of platforms for freelancers, but stick to reputable ones like Upwork, Fiverr, or LinkedIn to find legitimate opportunities.
  3. Build a Portfolio: Start with small, manageable projects that you can showcase. Even if you’re writing for free initially, note: you will definitely have to do some volunteer work; it counts as experience. Just make sure it’s something you can add to your portfolio.
  4. Network: Connect with other writers and professionals in the field. Attend webinars, join online groups, and make yourself known.

?Don’ts in copy writting:

  1. Don’t Fall for Ponzi Schemes: I know you’re wondering how that relates to copywriting, but it does. Getting fast money is how you deceive yourself into losing all the money you might already have.?
  2. Don’t Undervalue Your Work: It's tempting to lower your rates to secure a job, but this can lead to burnout and resentment. Value your work and charge accordingly.?
  3. Avoid Working Without Contracts: Always ensure there's a written agreement before starting any work. This protects you and sets clear expectations. Personally, I demand half payment before I start any gig.

?Gaining Real Experience:

Despite the setbacks, I found my footing by gaining real experience. I am currently interning at PrimeBrains; check them out, by the way; they are helpful for creators.?

I have also decided to boost the online presence of a petshop and animal hospital called Ganrovet Clinic and Petshop. No one offers you these opportunities; you have to create them.?

You can use the exit or make good cash from copywriting; choose ??.

?

The copywriting field is ever-evolving. Stay updated with new trends and continuously improve your skills. Success doesn’t come overnight. It’s a gradual process that requires persistence and hard work. Don’t be discouraged by small gigs. They add up, and each project helps you grow.
