My journey in building (in-app) communities

12 years ago - I have built over 20 business pages and over 30 groups, there was a trend and everyone engaged on Facebook, some of the groups are still active.

10 years ago - I was laboriously involved on the ground with faith-based communities, non-profits and grassroots organisations, helping the communities come together.

About 4 years ago I quit JP Morgan to build communities (deep-technology communities)

For my previous startup, we managed and engaged the workforce on the Facebook workplace. It's one of the smoothest workplace communication channels we had.

Now, Mark (Zukerberg) announced he is rolling out the community feature on Whatsapp and will extend it to respective Meta products (Facebook, Instagram, etc)

For the last few months, WhatsApp has apparently been testing the Communities feature. It will enable users to have separate groups under one roof to let them receive updates from these groups from a single screen — without scrolling through different chats. This will be helpful, especially in the case of schools, local clubs, or non-profit organisations that need to deal with multiple groups on the app.

We solved this for 1000s of faith-based communities globally - users of one group will not be able to see the conversations taking place in other groups.

Why I'm loving this update??

Every day and night I visualised how intimate social community and group interactions should happen - this is exactly how Mark describes his new private community experiences.

It's not a rant - but the satisfaction of how a billion-dollar company, they are the market leader but in some areas, I can see I have stepped ahead of their game, time and again.

Takeaways: Based on how I'm seeing people use communities, we’re now building API tools for close-knit in-app communities to have private conversations.
