My Journey in Architecture

My Journey in Architecture

The passion for creating spaces that blend functionality and beauty was ignited during my early years. My architectural journey began in Italy, where I graduated with a degree in Architecture from Università degli Studi di Reggio Calabria – Facoltà di Architettura in 1989. Seeking further enrichment, I embarked on a unique educational experience at the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom thru the Erasmus Program. This provided me with a rich interdisciplinary foundation that laid the groundwork for my future architectural endeavors.

The time spent in the United Kingdom exposed me to diverse perspectives and global influences, nurturing my creativity and fostering a deep appreciation for architectural history and design principles. The educational journey took me from the artistic landscapes of Italy to the vibrant academic environment of Liverpool, enhancing my abilities as a budding architect.

After completing my studies in the UK, I returned to Italy to continue honing my architectural skills. In 1990, I achieved a significant milestone by receiving my architectural license in Italy, solidifying my credentials as a licensed professional. With a strong educational background and professional license, I set my sights on new horizons.

In 1993, I relocated to Maryland, USA, where I quickly established myself as a reputable designer. I collaborated with the American Institute of Architects in Washington, DC, on the 9th Supplemental Edition of the Graphic Standards. This collaboration expanded my CADD proficiency and reinforced my commitment to excellence in architectural documentation.

The turn of the millennium marked a significant chapter in my career when I moved to California, a state rich in architectural diversity and opportunity. Over the next 25 years, I pushed the boundaries of design, contributing to a wide range of projects across the region.

In 2015, I reached a major professional milestone by obtaining my architectural license in California. This not only recognized my technical proficiency but also reinforced my dedication to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and ethics. Becoming a licensed architect in California enabled me to take on larger, more complex projects, further establishing my leadership in the industry. In 2023, I achieved two additional career milestones. I earned my architectural license in the State of Maryland, expanding my ability to practice in multiple regions, and I became a LEED Green Associate. This certification solidified my commitment to sustainable design and green building practices, enhancing my expertise in creating environmentally conscious projects.

Throughout my career, I have come to deeply value the role of continued education in staying current with the evolving architectural landscape. From sustainable design to technological advancements, architecture demands that we keep learning, adapting, and expanding our skill set. I have also been fortunate to have had incredible mentors along the way—seasoned professionals who not only shared their knowledge but also inspired me to push beyond the conventional limits of design. I believe that seeking out great mentors and remaining open to ongoing education are crucial in maintaining excellence in the field and ensuring that each new project represents a step forward in creativity and innovation.

In addition to my professional work, I have always been deeply committed to my community. Since 2009, I have actively volunteered in various community initiatives, lending my expertise to causes I believe in. Currently, I serve as a Planning Commissioner for the City of Dublin, where I use my architectural knowledge to help guide the city's future development. My involvement in urban planning has allowed me to contribute to creating spaces that foster a sense of community, accessibility, and sustainability.

Sharing my journey in architecture is an opportunity to reflect on the rich tapestry of experiences that have shaped my professional identity. Throughout my career, I have encountered numerous challenges, embraced transformative opportunities, and benefited from the guidance of inspiring mentors. This narrative serves not only as a personal chronicle but also as a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and the pursuit of knowledge in a field that continuously evolves.

I hope that sharing my journey can inspire others—particularly emerging architects and students—by highlighting the diverse paths one can take in this profession. Architecture is more than just constructing buildings; it involves creating spaces that foster community, sustainability, and innovation. By sharing my experiences, I hope to underscore the importance of continued education, mentorship, and community involvement in achieving success and making a positive impact in the world.

Moreover, as I reflect on my path from Europe to the United States, I recognize the global nature of architecture, historical significance, and the profound influences that shape our understanding of design. By sharing my story, I wish to contribute to a broader conversation about the role of architects in addressing contemporary challenges and fostering a built environment that is both functional and beautiful.
