My journey into Angel investing began amidst the challenges of the Covid pandemic. It all started when I was introduced to Clubhouse, a social networking app, by someone whose name I can't recall. However, I do remember that Marc Hommel sponsored my entry, as the platform required sponsorship at the time. As I explored Clubhouse, I found myself repeatedly drawn to a room called "Africans funding African," where I had the privilege of interacting with remarkable young founders.
In this virtual space, I encountered three outstanding individuals who stood out as leaders in hosting discussions about investing. I want to extend a special shout-out to Desati Nyanwleh, MBA , Mohammed Bility, CPD , and Happy Djebou ???????? . Their dedication and commitment to fostering meaningful conversations around investment opportunities were truly inspiring. I found myself spending hours upon hours in their rooms, soaking up knowledge and insights about the world of investing.
During one of these sessions, I had the pleasure of meeting an exceptional founder named Olamide Alao, who was pitching the innovative idea of crowd investing for commercial farming through her venture, Umera Farm. Captivated by her vision and determination, I took my first leap into investing in a founder's vision by supporting her venture. Along the way, I was thoroughly impressed by the enthusiasm and expertise of Yemisi, Umera Farm's COO, who further solidified my belief in their project.
As I continued to deepen my involvement, I became an advocate for Umera Farm, introducing other potential investors to this exciting opportunity. My initial foray into Angel investing was like dipping my toe in the water, but it quickly became an exhilarating journey of discovering promising startups and talented founders.
The experience with Clubhouse and the incredible individuals I met in "Africans funding African" rooms was transformative for me.
Let’s get back to the Clubhouse rooms as 2021 was closing out these founders started asking me for advice, coaching and mentoring. Then my next leap took place when two of these founders asked me to join their advisory boards. They both were leading amazing start-ups one was led by Dr Kike Oduba, MD, MPH and the other led by Dr Kenechukwu Ikebuaku, PhD . To be fair Dr Kike is a multiple founder and her current key startup is called WellnessWits . This was stage two on my journey into Angel Investing.
My path into Angel investing was uniquely shaped by my experience working for major technology investors Prosus Group and Naspers Limited . The exposure to the world of investment during that time surely increased my appetite for this exciting realm. However, it was the introduction to Clubhouse that truly ignited my passion and excitement.
As I delved deeper into Angel investing, I felt the urge to enhance my advisory skills in the boardroom. It was during this journey that I had the pleasure of crossing paths with an amazing young entrepreneur named Ropa Murombo. Interestingly, we met through our shared connection in church, and together, we created an incredible podcast that you can find at Https://www.solaosinoiki.com/podcast.
Through Ropa (the inspiration for this article by the way), I discovered a thought-provoking book called "The Black Opportunity," authored by Tino Chibebe . Reading this book opened my eyes to new perspectives and insights within the investment landscape. Intrigued by the ideas presented, I reached out to Tino for a conversation, which further fuelled my enthusiasm for Angel investing. Inspired and eager to explore this venture, I joined two exceptional Angel Crowdfunding Syndicates. These partnerships allowed me to participate in writing numerous micro cheques, approximately 25 in total, to support emerging startups and visionary founders. Also meant in one year I saw over 75 pitch decks.
As 2022 drew to a close, my desire for Angel investing intensified, and I realized that I wanted to embark on this journey with even greater intention and purpose. The thrill of uncovering promising ventures and contributing to the growth of young entrepreneurs had become an integral part of my professional and personal life. My goal is to be a guiding force for startups and a catalyst for innovation, driving positive change in the startup ecosystem for years to come.
?By the beginning of 2023, I had progressed from writing micro cheques to preparing to write my first significant investment as an Angel. Along this journey, my network of founders had grown substantially. People often ask me how to get started in Angel Investing, and my answer is simple: grow your network, offer mentorship and coaching, and sometimes, just lend a listening ear. You definitely can not invest in every deal, but you can add value to every founder who you are blessed to meet. Being a value creator to a founder is sometimes more precious than cash. A founder once said to me I value your input because sometimes you just point out the obvious which sometime a founder’s mind is too foggy to see.
In 2023, I finally penned my first proper Angel cheque, and to my surprise, I found myself on a Cap Table through a #SAFE (Simple Agreement for Future Equity). While I had been on Cap Tables before, it was usually through equity building and sweat equity, not as an investor. This shift marked a significant milestone in my Angel investing journey.

Towards the end of 2022, my path took a fortuitous turn when I attended a free webinar led by an exceptional #angelinvestor, Andy Ayim MBE , the founder of Angel Investing School . In that webinar, Andy generously shared invaluable insights and wisdom, dropping gold dust of knowledge that resonated deeply with me. It was a pivotal moment that solidified my commitment to this rewarding journey.
As I continue to evolve as an Angel Investor, I am ever more determined to expand my portfolio, support promising startups, and contribute meaningfully to the growth of entrepreneurs. The guidance received from seasoned investors like Andy Ayim and the connections I've nurtured along the way have become indispensable assets on this exciting adventure. I eagerly await the opportunities that lie ahead as I navigate the dynamic world of Angel investing with enthusiasm and dedication. One thing you definitely have to get your head around is what is called an Investor’s Thesis and rest assure that can change over time but be flexible and grow in it.
?In 2023, I faced a series of life-changing events that put my resilience and determination to the test. Despite the challenges, I have managed to navigate through with unwavering grit. My journey into Angel Investing has only just begun, but it has been an exhilarating ride so far.
Thanks to the guidance and mentorship of Barry Ross , I was introduced to Impact Shakers , a remarkable organization. To my surprise, I later discovered that Tino, whom I had known at the time, was also part of this impactful venture. Today, I am excited to be a member of the Investment Committee at Impact Shakers, another step in amazing transformative journey. Amazing founders there too Diána P. and Yonca Braeckman
Looking ahead, I can confidently say that my best days are yet to come. I am filled with excitement and anticipation as I continue to delve deeper into the world of Angel Investing. The experiences and lessons from so far 2023 have fortified my resolve, and I am eager to embrace the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead, knowing that each step will contribute to my growth as an investor and a person. With passion and perseverance as my companions, I am prepared to embrace whatever the future holds with open arms.
I want to give a heartfelt shoutout to the incredible Founders who have graciously welcomed me onto their Cap tables: Marvelous G. , Moagi Onkabetse , Yemi Akinwonmi , Mariyah A. and Jimmy Braimah Braimah. It's an honor and privilege to be part of your journeys, and I am excited to support you in achieving your visions and making a positive impact in the world. Here's to a bright future together!
Finally, I must give the disclaimer that Angel Investing, while fun and exciting is still one of the riskiest investments you can make. Do consult with your financial advisor before you go down this road, attend the Angel Investing School. Another easy way in, is to join an Angel community, I am a member of GFA Technologies Group , Fast Forward Venture Studio and recently joined HoaQ this will definitely increase the deal flow you see. Have a good one hope this was insightful and a path lighter for you.
