My Job at UoM!
Ayoola Johnson
Access, Student Success and Development Coordinator at UoM I Law Graduate
When I tell people that I work at 英国曼彻斯特大学 , the common question is, “What do you teach?” Well, I do not teach. I work as an Access, Student Success, and Development Coordinator. Long title, right? Tell me about it!?
In simple terms, I work within a team that predominantly focuses on the University’s flagship programme for Black heritage students, Manchester 10/10. Our team manages the project, its strategic direction, student participation, and importantly, ensures that it meets the aims of closing the awarding gap - the big elephant in the room!?
Almost 6 months into my role now, I can’t help but reflect on my experience working at a university.? I will describe it as thrilling, eye-opening, and certainly different, having transitioned from being a Student Union trustee and elected officer to working in a large institution like UoM.??
One thing that has remained constant, though, is the passion of colleagues for diverse representation and student welfare. That’s something I’ve enjoyed the most in my current role - working with a team dedicated to ensuring that our Black students’ voices are heard and well-represented across campus.?
Our team recently hosted a brilliantly attended student networking event, joined by over 70 undergraduates of Black heritage backgrounds from across the university. Positively, students commented that the event left them feeling “well connected”, “confident”, and “hopeful for the future.”?
For me, it was gratifying to see the hard work of our team, Team 10/10, pay off.? I’m excited to see students developing personal growth, building lifelong friendships, and creating memorable university experiences through our programme – these are interests I’ve been passionate about since my uni days and are now the crux of my job at UoM!
